CHICAGO APPLESHOW
A FROST FINANCIALLY
The apple show which closed Sat
urday night at Chicago, from an ar
tistic standpoint, was a success;
from point of attendance at .Vic the
person It was a frost, says the Pro
duce News. The reasons given are
that the show followed the big 10
day land show In the Coliseum,
where were displayed hundreds of
thousands of apples, lesldes a multi
tude of other attractions. People
had seen all the show apples they
needed for a year, at least. Then
every railroad and land boomer's
office windows In this city Is a free
apple show. The Spokane Chamler
of Commerce, which flnauced the
show. Is probably out of pocket,
though the sale of the apples Ought
to help some. H. Woods Co. and
the (iibson Fruit Co. are handling
the majority of them on consign
ment. The True Christmas Spirit
"Nineteen pounds of candy came
to my sister and myself last Christ
inas," said a self-supporting woman.
"My sister Is a trained nurse. Iam
a visiting secretary. We had dis
creetly mentioned, whenever . possl
ble, to our wealthy patrons that we
had just set up housekeeping In a
modest little apartment. We did
this In the hope that the usual del
uge of candy might be turned Into
other channels and that a pretty
piece of glass orchlna or silver would
be substituted. But no, the candy
came as usual. As each expensive
box arrived we felt the Merry Christ
mas spirit sink In our hearts.
"Finally, In desperation, we took
stock of the various five, two and
one pound boxes and estimated their
purchasing power. We realized that
if w e hail leen very poor we should
have received welcome gifts of gro
ceries and fruit. If rich we should
have received cut glass or silver.!
Our surplus candy was due, as we
fully realized, to the lack of under
standing which the very rich have
for what they consider the higher
grade of employes. They were all
kind-hearted people and our disap
pointment, as we surveyed our
candy boxes, would have made them
truly sorry. But why, we asked
ourselves, didn't they try for a min
ute to put themselves In our places?
This seems to me the true Christmas
spirit." New York Sun.
