Many Timet It V.'ill Be Found That Springi Which Causa Contact Be tween Bru.h.a and Armatura Ara Not Long Enough. When an engine flres la a Jerky man ner one of the possible causes of tn trouble may be found In tue commu tator, where the spring behind the commutator brushes may be out of order. After the brushes hare been worn down by loug usage It will some times be found that the springs which are necessary to cause the contact be tween the brushes and the armature are not long enough to serve this pur pose, with the result that a good con tact Is not made when the armature Is revolving rapidly. The aggravat ing part of this sort of trouble Is that It Is very hard to locate, especially as everything works all right when the commutator Is tested when the engine is not running. If there Is trouble with the Ignition and all of the other parts of the apparatus are found to be In good order It will be a good plan to lengthen the springs so that a firm contact can be secured. PLUR-DE-LIS -MILLINERY- All the Latest Fall And Winter Shapes Moderate - Prices Bartmess Building 20 Acres OK ine Red Shot Soil Hood River Apple Land in the Famous Oak Grove District Ten miles out in the southwest iart of the Hood River Valley, I I.mki rover, uregon. The tract is partly improved with 5 acres in young com mercial orchard, has fairly good house, barns, etc., and a fine spring well which is capable of being developed sufficiently to irrigate 40 or more acres. This tract is in the best apple section in the valley composed of all red shot soil. The surrounding country is being rapidly de veloped and growing into big money, FRANK I. rOKSBtZRU. Owner Hood River, Oregon Chamois as a Strainer. It should be understood that no dif ficulty need be experienced In strain ing gasoline through a chamois skin. When the chamois skin In the funnel Is dry pour water upon It and see If It will go through. Then while the leath er still Is wet with water try to pour gasoline through and to the surprise of many It will not go at all. The conclusion reached Is that water will not pass through a porous substance saturated with gasoline and that the same Is true as regards gasoline pass ing through when the substance U first saturated with water. It will be found that the separating value depends upon the fact that gasoline and water will not mix and that in order to pass through the chamois a liquid must mix with the liquid which fills the pores of the leather. If when the leather Is dry a small portion Is wet with water and then the rest with gasoline, both water and gasoline may be poured through the funnel, each cnoosmg oniy that nnrtlnn wet orlinnallv or tne same liquid. A Soars Fuel Tank. Where Gravity feed is used for the fuel supply to the carburetor the fuel tank is usually fitted as high as possl ble under the driver's seat, this giving lust about sufficient head of fuel to allow of satisfactory working on or dlnarv give and take roads. However, when touring through hilly districts It Is found that at times mere is aim culty In maintaining the proper fuel feed to the carburetor, so that just at the time when most fuel Is needed less is obtained. To get over this dif ficulty a k i hi re tank can be fitted at the forward end of the car and con nected to the carburetor, so that the fact of having hill climbing to do would allow of really a higher bead of fuel ft) be supplied to the carburetor, so that no difficulty in climbing the worst of bills can be caused by failure of the fuel supply. Too much lubrication Is a most fer tile cause of smoky exhausts. This Is often Cue to too much oil belug put lu the crank case at one time. Less oil, but more ofteu, Is better. Cleaning out the cylinders with kerosene auJ allowing the mixed oil Id the crank case to remain Is another cause of moky exhausts. Too rich a mixture will cause smoke, as will the use of Inferior grades of lubricating oil. If the motor Is equipped with a good oil ing system nud one that can be prop erly regulated, take a minute to adjust it I.enkv valves will cause a smoky exhause, but not to the extent of the other causes.
