Steluhardt on bid apple buy at Hood Klver: "Jon. 11. Stelnhanlt, of Stelnbardt & Kelly, New York, returned laat week from the Northwest, after clos ing up for bid firm what he nays Is the lurgest apple Lurch awes ever made. As baa been previously told, Mr. Steluhardt bought the bulk of the Mood Klver crop for bin firm ills' purchases, he said, will amount to ueurly aoo,(XH barrels, of which 100,000 are.Sultreobergs, another 100,- 000 Newtowns and the balance other varieties, such as (J olden Ortley, Arkansas' Blacks, Ked Cheeks, Jona thans and (Jravenstelns. The Cirav- enstelns are all cleaned up and Jona thans are now being shipped. Ship ments of Kpltzenbergs start from the Hood Klver Valley this week and the first carloads will be here about Oc tober 10. Newtowns start about a week later. "The crop lo the Hood Klver Val ley, Mr. Stelnbardt says, Is two weeks earlier than usual and the quality, without question, the finest ever grown. There Is a large apple crop In the valley, wliicli lie esti mates at 500,000 to 0)0,000 boxes. One peculiar feature about the val ley, according to Mr. Stelnbardt, Is that the lurgcr the crop the better the quality, and this is the largest crop it has had. He says that with in a couple of years Hood Klver will be growing 1,000,000 boxes of apples annually. Every year new orchards are coming Into bearing and the acreage Is Increasing rapidly. There Is plenty of room to grow, Mr. Stelu hardt says, as of the 50,000 acres of orchard laod In that section, not over 10,000 acres are under cultiva tion, planted or In bearing. The land Is being taken up rapidly and he expects the output of the valley to keep on increasing. There Is no fear of overproduction; l)ecause the quality of the fruit In the Hood Klver Valley Is such, and it Is so wel packed, that there Is always a de mand for It at good prices. "When asked about probable prices, Mr. Steluhardt said that the Idea of the mirth western ussoela- lons, particularly the Hood River Apple Growers' Union, was that they wanted the fruit well distribu ted among nil classes of consumers. To do this, they were willing to sell their fruit nt a reasonable price, so that It can Im? put Into consumption raplply. They were not like up State growers who hold out for prices that mean certain losses to he purchasers. Mr. Stelnbardt looks for prices to prevail which will en able the fruit to be marketed rapidly and still show a fair margin of profit to all concerned. He spoke particu larly of the (iolilen Ortley apples, of which he will have about 10,ihk boxes. These, he says, are a particu larly beautiful apple, late anil a good keeer. They grow better In the Hood Klver Valley than any other place. After leaving Hood Klver, Mr. Stelnbardt visited the Medford, Ore., section. He was a guest of the Kogne Klver Fruit Growers' Associa tion und visited a number of the apple orchards. He says In his esti mation, next to Hood It may be Jeffries and bis strain arc never quite themselves again, but tin pickled pig's foot and the rest are always equal to the test. They never dissipate a bit, but spend the Hiiinuier prime and fit. and let the Irost succeed the dew, and they're there, you bet, us good as new. The doughty oyster on his shell, the ctiltllii looking strong and well, and clear and resolute of eye, the hardy brauds of winter pie. The applebutter, Juice and flake, the same that mother used to make, and the (ruckling of our youthful lot, the 'ock anil captain of the pot. The football season will revert, und the center rush will paw the dirt. He'll wake the natives with bis roar, and bawl for victory und gore. The plled-up dying and the dead will limns against his butting bead, and he'll spin the planet In his rage Just like a squirrel In his cage. Alas for those who calmly sit de viling to denature It, and all the col lege renegades who think to temper It for maids! The students and the teachers howl, and the rooters and the bleachers yowl, and dnrund lie he who does not rise a.id kill some body twice his size. The aeroplanes will cruise the air above the old-time countv fair, and the lucky winner will be he who wins the best two fulls In three. The farmer In his limousine will tool around upon the green, and the hired man will sleze the chance to wear his other pair of pants. The softer weather will defy The blandishments of June, And the month will give us by and by The ofllcehunter's moon. A chop will cost four bits a pound, And beef a buck a bite, And the wolf will wear a groove around The cabin every night. And then Novemlier will return W ith cold and chilly draft. And the wild goose going down the line With Winter lilting aft.
