MASTERLY SERMON BY IK LATHROP The following article wad bauded to tbe News ty an admirer ol Itev. A. H. Latbrop who had the pleasure of lltitenlnK to a sermon by the rev erend gentleman on Sunday: Dr. A. H. Lathrop, of C'reston, Iowa, preached at the Asbury M. E. church Sunday morning at 11 o'clock from the subject found In ICerelatlons 3:11 "Hold fast that thou bast, that do man take tby crown." On account of Dr. Latbrop's for mer pastorate at the above church, and because of his great popularity with the membership of said church, there was a crowded bouse, which was not disappointed 1u the least, as the doctor was In his best trim, and has not lost any of bis old-time vim. but preached a masterly sermon, laying especial stress on tbe crown of thorns, "not that you shall not press down tbe crowu of thorns ou tbe laborer's brow," of Bryan fame, but that you must press down tbe crown of thorns until the spine prick deeply In the brow, so deep that blood will run, and that the old fellow will be killed within you and give Christ a chance to come In and do His work of cleansing your heart and soul, so that Instead of thinking of your personal wants, you will le anxious about your neighbor's wel fare; and instead of thinking of fine carpets for your own home, you will think of the kind of furnishings your neighbor bas; Instead of buying land to raise apples, and selling applt-s to buy land to raise more apples, you will make It a point In life to be less personal and more thrlstllke, and by steps of eliminating the superfluous from life construct a character that will be the right answer for (jod and man. Tbe only real aristocracy In the world Is goodness. Religion Is to te put In Jumpers and overalls; It Is for use every day and everywhere. Thus man exalts hlmseff and reigns with Christ In life. He closed with a description of the greatness of the supply of divine grace for human needs. As tbe ocean Is large enough for the fish, as tbe Creator is great enough for the creature, so Is the richness of His grace able to supply all our want according to tbe fullness of His graie. o cast your wants at His leet. The effect of tbe sermon was great, Judging from the aniens, tearful eyes, glad, anxious faces, and the expres sions of satisfaction after the sermon was over. (Jlad to have you present with us, doctor. Come again, often Doctor Lathrop had the reputa tlon of being one of the big preachers of the Northwest when he was here as a pastor, aud judging him by the way be preaches, his Intelligent meth od of presenting the subject to his hearers, and his dally life and lufiu ence, he does not diIhs the mark. SAYS WEST LOBBIED FOR CORPORATIONS During the recent primary cam palgn, Judge A. S. Bennett, Demo cratic leader and anti-corporation man, of The Dalles, In a circular let ter, addressed to th Democratic voters of Wasco county, charged Oswald West, IemocratIc nominee for governor, with having lobbied before the last Legislature In the In terest of the corporations. The spe cific charge In the letter was that West worked against a bill for the regulation of livestock shipments on the railroads a measure demanded by and directly affecting the live stock Interests of this state. Judge Bennett's letter. In part follows: "I have reason to lielleve that Mr, West Is too close to the corporations and that he Is not In sympathy with progressive Democratic Ideas. "He went before the committee In the last legislature and lobbied In the Interest of the corporations against a very good bill for the reu latton of livestock shipments on rail roads, which was Is-lng asked for by myself and other livestock men; and for this and other reasons, I do not lielleve him to lie a proper man for Democratic candidate for the IiIkIi otllce of governor.
