Prosperity or Uncertainty?
It has been under the adminis
tration of the Republican party
that Hood River, with the rest of
Uncle Sam's domain has enjoyed
its greatest prosperity. There
does not seem then any reason
for a change and every reason
why there should not be. It has
been under the policies of this
same party that its products
have brought the highest prices
in the world's markets and it is
reasonable to suppose that under
this self same policy they wil
continue to do so. The condition
that confronts the voter is that
of supporting the element that
is endeavoring to keep these pol
icies in existence. The issue is
not so much a change from Re
publican to Democratic rule as
represented by the conservative
element of the latter party, as it
is a change in power to a move
ment that at present represents
nothing and whose policies are
not known. Republicans who
believe in a continuance of the
prosperous rule we are now under
will vote for the candidates that
represent and endorse the pres
ent administration and which are
in this instance on the assembly
or the regular Republican ticket.
Those who are for uncertainty,
doubt and probable business and
financial disturbance and disaster
will vote otherwise.
Satisfactory in Washington
The result of the Washington
primaries, according to reports
from Seattle, indicates that there
will be no change in the local op
tion law this year. In a few
counties friends of the prohibi
tion workers were elected, but
the general results indicate that
the voters are willing to give the
present law a more thorough
trial before affecting any change.
The law has worked out satis
factorily wherever it has b?en
tried, and is so utterly fair in al
lowing each community to settle
the liquor question for itself that
any legislators who trifle with it
or try to take up the time of the
coming session with another long
drawn out fight like that which
occupied the minds of the law
makers in 1909, will make them
selves unpopular.
If the eternal liquor question
can be eliminated from the dis
cussions of the legislature many
of the nominees now believe that
body can profitably spend its
time in cutting down the public
expenses instead of fighting for
the entire session and then rail
roading an enormous appropria
tions bill through the closing
hours as was done two years ago.
The Washington local option
law is similar to the one being
advocated this year for Oregon.
Autos Bringing Good Roads
The movement for good roads
in the states of the northwest
has received a great impetus
from automobile owners, and
the organization last week of the
Western Automobile Association
which numbers among its mem
bers the auto clubs of the cities
of the northwest, will be an im
portant event in the campaign
for better highways. While the
farmers and motorists are not
always friendly they agree on
the good roads question. All
over Washington the county com
missioners selected at the pri
mary election of Sept. 13 were
pledged to the good roads cause.
Slowly but surely this movement
is assuming the importance it
deserves.
