TAXPAYERS' LEAGUE
MOVEMENT GROWING
That the inovemeDt started last
year for the organization of local
county tax leagues Is bearing fruit is
evident from the fact that organlza
tlons of this kind now exist In sev
era) of the counties In the state; the
latest to Ji.ln the ranks being Pierce
county, where, at a meeting of tax
payers called by the TacomaCham
ber of Commerce on the 10th of this
month, a tax leugue was formed to
handle matters pertaining to tax
levies and public expenditures In the
future.
The State Taxpayers' League, In
waging Its vigorous campaign
ngalnst extravagance In public af
fairs, has sent out circulars to tax
payers throughout the state udvo
eating the organization of local tax
leagues, pointing out that In such
leagues exist, composed of the right
men, tax ofilclals would gladly wel
come their assistance and that a
great deal of good could be accom
plished in checking extravagance and
unnecessary appropriations.

Let Them Alone
Some people nre so peevish and
sensitive nnd, as a consequence, so
exacting that they an1 a constant
trial to their families. It In bad
enough when It Is a woman, but It
Is far worse when It Is a man who
I in pones the Inlllctlon. 'Hie usual
method of dealing with such people
Is to coax them with the Idea of re
storing their good humor nnd
thereby make the domestic life lienr
able. Hut It Is doubtful If the
method Is wise. I'sually the more
such M'ople are coddled the more ex
acting they grow. Probably the
best plan Is to convince them by res
olute firmness, kindly displayed, that
their unreasonable actions nnd de
mands cannot lie granted Kx
change. For Sale

A NARROW ESCAPE,
AS TEDDY TELLS IT
At last we came In sight of the
mighty game. The trail took a
twist to one side, and there, thirty
yards In front of us, we made out
part of the gray and mannive head
of an elephaut resting his tusks on
the branches of a young tree ele
phants hardly ever feed at noon. A
couple of minutes passed before, by
cautious scrutiny, we were able to
tell whether the animal we could see
was a cow or a bull, and whether. If
a bull, It carried heavy enough horns.
Then we saw that It was a big bull
with good Ivory. It turned Its head
In my direction nnd I saw Its eye;
and I fired a little to one side of the
eye at a spot which I thought would
lead to the brain. I struck exactly
where I aimed, hut the head of an
elephant In enormous and thchralu
small, and the bullet missed It. How
ever, the shock momentarily stuuued
the tieant. He stumbled forward,
half f illing, and as he recovered I
tired with the second barrel, again
aiming for the brain. This tlmu the
bullet sped true, and ns I lowered the
rllle from my shoulder I saw the
great lord of the forest come crash
ing to the ground.
Hut at that very Instant, before
there was a moment's time In which
to reload, the thick bushes parted
Immediately on my left front, and
through them surged the vast bulk
of a charging bull elephant, the
matted mass of tough creepers snap
ping like packthread before his rush.
He was so clone that he could have
touched me with his trunk. I leaped
to one aide and. dodged iH'hlnd a tree
trunk, opening the rllle, throwing
out the empty shells, and slipping
n two cartridges. Meanwhile Cun-
nlnghame tired right nnd left, at the
saiue time throwing nimseii into me
tushes on the other side. Both his
bullets went home, nnd the bull
topped short In his charge, wheeled.
and Immediately disappeared In the
thick cover. We ran forward, but
the forest had closed over his wake.
We heard him trumpet shrilly, and
hen all sounds ceased.
