Shoe on the Other Foot
The situation in the political
eampaijrn at present shows that
candidates recommended by the
assembly are quietly waiting for
endorsement or rejection at the
primaries, while their opponents
are skipping about the country
oratorically lambasting them or
each other.
The so-called "Corrupt Ma
chine" is working openly and
above board in advocating and
furthering its policies and in en
dorsing candidates, while the
anti-assembly and statement
howlers are holding secret ses
sions, forming combinations and
spending big sums to secure the
election of their men. 1 he as
sembly is conducting a campaign
devoid of mudslinging while their
bellicose objectors have got out
the muck rake and steam ham
mer. They insist on having a
scrap and failing to get it with
the assemblyites they have com
menced to dig into each other.
In the meantime literature is
diffuse. U'Ren has seen to that.
The Selz fund supplies the dough.
High sounding and empty argu
ments are put before the people
and the propaganda is complete.
Last, but not least, the Bourne
sack is open to the faithful and
candidates who will embrace the
statement machine are at liberty
to help themselves, while a co
terie of office holders is directing
its movements in the dark and
openly shouting to the people to
support the pure and undefiled
candidates of its choosing.
In short, woe! woe! things
have been reversed. The as
sembly supporters have dispensed
with the machine, the anti-as-semblyites
have built one and
the shoe is on the other foot.
A Public Park
The members of the Woman's
Club are agitating the matter of
a public park for Hood River and
believe the time to get a site for
this purpose is while ground that
is available for it can still be had
in a central location. The judg
ment of the members of the
club is undoubtedly correct. The
time to get a public breathing
spot for a city is when it is in its
infancy and that time at Hood
River is right now. In a few
years a spot of green in the cen
ter of town will add much to its
appearance as well as affording
a public outdoor resting place
that will be appreciated. The
park movement should rececive
encouragement. We have not
yet arrived at that stage where
it is a question of a large sum of
money to secure it and the city
offers opportunities in this line
that few places possess and, to
repeat, now is the time to get it.
Editorial Comment
No man ever helped to build
up his town by running it down,
nor by invidious comparisons
with other towns to the detri
ment of his own.
Many people expect to find
happiness by living selfiishly to
themselves. They are on the
wrong track; not that way does
happiness lie, but in helpful ser
vice to others.
Many people have the idea
that it is only evil things that
are contagious. That is a mis
take. There is lots of splendid
contagion about a sunny smile, a
cherry word and a beautiful j
character. Therefore if e.ilj
companionship is bad, as it is.
let us not forget the value and
influence of good companionship.
It is well meant, but nonethe
less it is cruelty, to make life too
easy for young people. If they
are encouraged to believe that
nothing but that which is pleas
ant is to come their way, they
will to a large extent be unfitted
to wrestle with the hard thing3
of life. Failure to realize this
truth has led some parents to
work untold harm to their chil
dren. And now it is stated that the
government lottery in Cuba,
which was expected to enrich
the treasury and produce general
prosperity, has resulted in the
impoverishment of the people of
that island. The result could
not well be otherwise, for bet
ting and gambling invariably
does that and also works mischief
in other ways, including the
weakening of the moral fiber and
a disinclination for honest work.
"Scant and diaphanous" were
the words used to describe the
costume of a Russian countess at
the barefoot dance given by her
before Newport society. In
other words, it was a dress
which no modest woman would
have worn, neither would a self
respecting company of people
have tolerated it. Yet there are
people who envy Newport society
and would do anything to get
into it, which shows that there
is no accounting for tastes.
The fading flower and falling
leaf of autumn are not a proof of
failure but of accomplishment,
and a promise of that which is
to come. So men in the autumn
of their life are not to think life
henceforth is but of little use be
cause they have given of their
best and must make way for
younger men. Their years have
been spent in fruitful labor,
thereby making possible the
achievements of men who are to
follow them.
One of the best ways to keep
young people from vicious or
questionable pleasures and enter
tainments is to give them some
thing equally interesting, but
free from objectionable features.
Merely to say as to amusements
and recreation, "Thou shalt not, "
will work evil instead of good.
Healthy young people with good,
red blood coursing through their
veins, and with lots of animal
spirit, cannot be shut down upon
without disastrous results.
From the clash of discordant
elements within political parties
and between the parties them
selves, will surely come progress
along several lines. Anything is
better than inaction or apathy,
because when such a condition
prevails unscrupulous bosses and
selfish interests reap their har
vest of ill-gotten power or
wealth. Noise and tumult are
not pleasant, but, like a thunder
storm, they clear the atmos
phere, and the political, social
and economic atmosphere has
been sadly in need of it for some
time.
