A handsome pennant bearing the name of the Hotel Oregon was swung to the breeze Thursday on the new flagstaff recently erected on the top of the hotel. Mr. and Mrs. James Stranahan are spending the week at the roast and are located at Columbia Beach, where Mr. Stranahan owns a sum mer home. E. L. Smith has received notifica tion that he has been appointed by the governor to represent Oregon at the meeting of the conservation com mission In St. Paul Sept. 4th to 8th. Rudolph Spreckles, the San Fran cisco sugar magnate, came up as far as Hood River Thursday on the Spencer. Mr. Spreckles was accom panied by a number of prominent Portland business men. Mr. and Mrs. Burt Van Horn, Miss Havlland and Miss Natalie Havl land, who have been guests for sev eral weeks at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Van Horn, left this week for their home lu New York. Cochran, brother of Geo, T. Cochran, who Is a candidate for state water commissioner from the First Oregon district, was In town Saturday on a friendly visit. Mr, Cochran's home Is at La Grande. Mrs. Albert Sutton and daughters who have been visiting relatives In Tacoma for some time, returned to Hood River Wednesday. They were accompanied by Mrs. Henry Hewitt of Tacoma, who wll be the Suttons guest for a time. Miss Grace Kelr and A. S. Kelr, her brother, spent last week at New port on a recreation trip. Miss Kelr, who has been staying here for some time, will return to Seattle to resume her duties as teacher In one of the public schools there. Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Crane and son are here from Montclalr, N. J., and at present are stopping at Mrs Howe's. Mr. Crane for a numlwr of years has been engaged In the whole sale coal business In New York and may decide to Invest here. O. R.
