Nothing eomnares Hood Rivee, Oeeckim -th ;f ; a. rw.,,. MOl, tUa n Hli lb 111 V V V A IV 1 V CV II VI1V very folk desired. A strong feature is that not only is the man of the household informed but the housewife and her chil dren press to the car. No trouble should be spared to fil that now being fitted out by the Great Northern railroad with our best. A hint may be permitted That photographs are accepted and treasured when books and circulars do not attract. The farm homes of Oregon - bearing comfort, beauty, prosperity on the face of them are the best illustrations for the grain and fruit we raise. Not a county in our state should fail to be repre sented in that gallery. Develop ment leagues may well spend hundreds of dollars from their treasuries in providing this store of pictures of Oregon scenes and life for free distribution wher ever the car goes. Too Many Churches A theme that interested Hood River church goers last Sunday was presented to their respective congregations by the pastors of two of the leading churches here under the head of "Too Many Churches at Hood River." The arguments of these worthy pas tors is along the line that better results would be accomplished by the various congregations of the churches uniting. There is no question about the correctness of the theory. In fact, it would have been better for the integrity of the Christian religion if the manifold sects which have sprung from the par ent churches had never been born. The universal uplifting of man kind dating from the acceptance of the teachings of Christ has been the most potent influence toward a higher civilization in the history of the world. With the acceptance of these teachings came education and with educa tion the desire for personal and religious liberty. These are among the great things that Christianity has accomplished. It has, however, had its obverse side. Having gained knowledge the people were no longer willing to be led along the paths of the simple, wise and beautiful teach ings of Christ or to accept the faith of their forefathers. There fore, as in ages before, they fashioned gods and religions ac cording to their desires. Origin ally there was a good deal of Christianity in the new sects that sprang up, but as offshoots have appeared there has gotten to be less. In latter days Christianity in most instances has become an empty name under the guise of which religions are set up as the will of the few, or the one, may dictate and are dependent upon their success for fad, sensation alism, and not infrequently ri baldry and amusement. The strength and glory of the Christian religion is not in coup ling it with science, is not in as sociating it with moral philoso phy, is not in accepting half of it and supplying, or endeavoring to supply, the other half. In stead, the strength and glory of it is in a return to its simple teachings, to accept it in the spirit and not in the form, to make of it something apart from the rest of life and, in short, not a business. When mankind will worship God in this spirit alone there will be need of but one church, and not before. Effective Advertising All the advertising of counties, cities, districts, in these Pacific states, that is carried on under the head of development, is ef fective in reaching and inform ing a multitude of people east of us on the productions and attrac tions of this empire within an empire. The fact is responsible for the outpouring of books, pictures, booklets and pamphlets without end, says the Oregonian. That much of this literature is highly colored is undeniable. That all is discounted by the best of the eastern inquirers when at last it reaches them is also true. Like bullets on a battlefield, thousands on thousands fail to reach a mark. But under this same heading come other forms of advertising not open to the dangers of exag geration, and of disbelief. One is that of the Oregon products car, filled with grain?, grasses, fruits, vegetables, in fact a fair on wheels. From city to city, from country depot to depot, it POLITICAL COLUMN NORTH WEST NOTES Never before tn the history of the Pavltic coaut ban there beeu ouch cloae feeling of co-operation as there lil at prweut. A recent trip to !San Francisco and through the North west cities has convinced Manager Chapman of the Commercial Club Promotion Committee that a cou certed movement for the good of the whole coast is opportune and will be supported. He has evolved the slo gan, "All the coast for the coast all the time," and will use It tn the work of the new Convention bureau that will strive just as hard to bring con ventions to any coast point that wants them as to Portland. "This helpful spirit was manifest wherever I went," said Manager Chapman "Tacoma, San Francisco, Spokane, Seattle, Victoria, Vancouver and New Westminister all realize that the strength of the coast Is In concerted effort. They are organlz Ing along the same lines to capture conventions and for mutual work This is a spleddld prospect and will le productive of great good In fu ture. A united const will be a mighty factor in development work 'Freewater will celebrate Peach Day on August 1". This has liecome an annual affair and the festival of the peach is widely attended. This luscious fruit Is served free to every one attending and there Is to liean all-day program, whleh prominent speakers. There will also be races, a baby show and other attractions. Commercial bodies of this state are being invited by the Twlce-a-Week Spokesman Review, Spokane, to ex press an opinion on the most prom Islng agricultural development In their own sections and the means used to further the advancement. An Interchange of Idena along these lines will be helpful. This paper has taken an active interest in the In tensive development of the North weft and Is doing much to further It. Coos P.ay cities will have a week of festivities, begin nl sg August 1." Mayors of Oregon cities have been Invited to attend the Coos I5ay car nival and It Is expected a Mayors' Association will be formed. There will be all kinds of water sports. races, music, clam-bakes, dances and many varied forms of entertainment for all who attend. Many are ex pected from Willamette Valley points and Southern Oregon, while Port land will send down a large delega tlon to participate. Premiums for livestock exhibited at the Harvest Festival In Portland September 3-10 have just been nu thorlzed, aggregating $10,K0. In addition there will be a purse hung up for the nu-es, totalling .'!0,OW. A large part of this figure, however, Is paid by the entry fees, whereas the livestock premiums are a straight outlay by the Fair Associa tion. This gives the Harvest Festi val a premium list eual to the State Fair, which has the most liberal premiums of any fair on the coast. A pony, harness and cart will be given away by the Fair management on Children's Day, each child enter lug the grounds having an eual op portunity to secure It free.
