Samuel Davidson, who was drowned Sunday In the Willamette river at Portland was well known here, having formerly been a Hood Klver resident and at one time lived on the old Wunder place In the val ley. When he left here he went to Kugene to take a law course in the utate university. Secretary Itallluger of the Depart ment of ttie Interior is busy on a trip of Inspection of the reclamation proj ects of the stite, and is becoming familiar with the workings of the service In Oregon. Among other tilings, he will start preliminary sur veys of Crater Lake .National Dark, looking toward its development along the lines of the bettdr known national parks of the country. Miss Mary Kothrock, a well known Pendleton girl who has been teach ing In the high school at Hood Kiver since her graduation from the di versity of Oregon with the class of '1)7 and who Im now visiting friends and relatives here, is to le an Au gust bride. Mr. Helsley, who has estimated the resources of Hood Klver from the railroad trains, on which he had passed through here several times, was astonished at the extent of country and Its wonderful productiveness. Watson have formed a partnership for the practice of law. Mr. Watson Is a New Yorker having practiced law In the big metropolis of the Kinplre stale but for whom the attractions of Hood Kiver were greater than the courts of Oothum. Shaking the dust of Broadway off his feet about a year ago he came to the Apple City and It looked so good to him he de cided to anchor. Having bought an apple ranch he has put himself In Hue to become a millionaire and iu the meantime will Interpret Klackstone for the public. Mr. Watson Is a man of ability, of sterling qualities and one worth knowing, both In aud out of his profession. Local Elks to (Jo to Astoria A meeting of Hood Kiver Llks was held Wednesday evening to take action on Joining an excursion to As toria this week, when the new club house of the local lodge there will be dedicated. The excursion will be conducted under the auspices of The Dalles lodge aud will leave that city Friday night. A large number of lo cal members of theantlered herd have decided to take In the trip, uud it is expected that they will have such a time as only the members of tills order can put up. Had Successful Season The Hood Kiver lluseball Associa tion, which had a meeting recently, reports a successful season, t'nder the management of J. L. Morrison and L. L Morse, the stix'kholdt rs of the association were enabled to pay off an Indebtedness of liHI and leave a surplus iu the treasury. The funds were turned over to the association by Mr. Morrison, who has looked after Its affairs this summer. Drive Stakes on Hood Kiver Road The Portland Journal says that county surveyors are at work estab lishing grade stakes for the proposed road to Hood Kiver along the Co lumbia. The right-of-way has Iktii surveyed and grud'-s are being es tabllshed as rapidly as possible, and It Is thought that everything will be In readiness tols?glu actual construc tion work In a mouth or two. Miss Laura Hale Is visiting her brother, Arthur Hale. Clarence Mowreader and Kandolph Morrow, who have been sick with typhoid fever are recovering. Mr. Kolierg and family were guests of Mr. and Mrs. K. L Lnge Sunday. Several from the vicinity went to Odell Sunday to hear Hilly Sunday. Kev. Hayes gave a sermon on the "Fall of Ilabylou"to nu appreciative congregation Sunday morning, preaching at Hood Kiver in the even lag. The outing party composed of Messrs. Cameron, Hanson, Jarvls and their wives and others returned from Trout Lake Saturday well sat isfied with t lit trip and laden with huckleberries.
