kind. The well known movement on
the Oregon aide, where the (). H. & X.

to the rumor that this side Is also

mountains on both sides of the river
are actually moving toward each
other it would seem that the ancient
Indian legent were really true; that
th Bridge of the Gods did exist at

A NOBLE RED MAN.
He Wn Net tha Stately Chiaf Wolaa
lay Expactad to Maat.
Lord Wolseley wu stationed in Can
ada many years ago. Ou one occasion
be spent a holiday la the wilds, build
ing a wigwam and practicing general
ly what we should now call the "back
to nature" cure.
It was soon after his arrival In the
country, and as tbe means of commu
nication were still somewbst primi
tive be had never seen an Indian and
was moat anxious to make tbe red
man's acquaintance. Some friends of
his promised to send one or two to see
bim, as tbere was an encampment not
very far away.
At last one morning Lord Wolseley
was Informed that a chief bad called
to see him. With bis mind full of tbe
conventional Indian, a man of com
manding presence, arrayed in all tbe
glory of paint and feathers, be eagerly
stepped outside bis wigwam to make
bis acquaintance. But be received a
rode shock wbeo be found a wizened
gentleman dressed in a tattered frock
coat and ancient waistcoat.
However, the general stifled bis as
tonishment and played the genial boat,
although horribly bored at the inces
sant chatter of the Indian, who had
been in the service of tbe Hudson Bay
company and therefore could speak
broken English fairly fluently.
At length, anxious to get rid of bis
visitor, be took a twenty-five cent
piece out of bis pocket and. fearing he
might be grossly insulting bis visitor,
presented It to blm.
Tbe latter took it, looked at it care
fully, felt tbe edges and then said:
"Can you inak' it half dollar?"
THE WET RAIN.
There Are Several Varieties, and All
Have Their Whims.
Bain Is principally composed of
water, but it should not be confused
wltb mining stock.
Bain always comes on Sunday after
noons and wash days.
Wash day may be changed to any day
In tbe week, systematically or Indis
criminately, but tbe rain will come.
Sunday afternoou, however, cannot
be changed to any other afternoon.
Tbe rain will bold off until you are
ready to go driving, and then tbe word
will be passed along the mysterious
currents of tbe air, and a double order
of cirrus and cumulus will be hurried
in from the west.
Also In tbe morning, when you leave
borne and carry your umbrella and
raincoat, tbe rain will go away and
sulk. But If you take heart of the
fair sky and leave the umbrella and
other trimmings then the rain will
wait until you leave the office and then
get you. Incidentally it will tuck a
few grip and rheumatism germs Into
your system.
Bain ia good for the crops, but why
it takes you for a crop is bard to un
derstand.
Bain never brought fame to any one
except Noah. Probably on tbe day tbe
flood began ho watched the last picnic
party drive out of town in a bus, shout
ing sarcastic things at blm through tbe
dust.
There are several varieties of rain,
but the one most popular with the
weather bureau is called Trobably."

of me. young man," be said distantly.
"Why, don't you remember me, sir?
I am broke. Two years ago you told
me If I ever went broke to come
around and see you."
Tbe millionaire beamed a benevolent
id tie.
"So I did. my son; so I did. Here is
the envelope all ready for you."
Tbe young man took tbe bulky en
velope, and bis spirits rose like the
mercury on a July day.
"Ah, a little assistance, I suppose?"
"No; a great assistance. It is a valu
able little pamphlet I wrote during my
pare time entitled 'How to Be Broke

Persian Shawls.
Tbe "sbal" of Herman whence our
word "shawl" Is made of goats' hair.
Like tbe carpet, the sbawl patterns
are learned by heart, and tbe work is
even finer. Children also do this work.
It Is estimated tbat Herman turns out
$300,000 worth of shawls, handmade,
a year. Tbe finest product Is a fir cone
pattern, a rich color effect, made espe

who wears It as a robe of honor on tbe
Persian New Year's day.
He Got Her.
"It's ao long since you called upon
me," said the girl ss she came down
to the young man in the parlor, "tbat
I was beginning to think you were for
getting me."

smart youth, "and that's why I've
