Smith were visitors at Mr. Hand's home in Portland and Mrs. Smith Is reported to be much Improved In health by her stay In the Kose City. Will Hand, E. A. Baker, F. E. Jack son aud Chus. Morse spent two days at Lost Lake last week, returning Wednesday night. With the excep tion of J. ). fioldtwalte and a party of rancher friends who preceded them the city delegation were the first to reach the lake by wagon this year. The (ioldthwalte party went In just ahead and cleared out the brush. Mr. Baker reports a pleasant trip and fairly good fishing. Combs of the National Life was a business visitor here Wednes' day and Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. John A. Wilson re turned Sunday from a week's visit at Astoria and Portland. H. R. Albee was here last week and spent a day or two at his orchard returning to Portland Thursday. The Misses McKenzie, Pauline Man clette and Flora Kemp were Sunday visitors of the Misses Hawley, In this city. Phil Carroll had a valuable bird dog killed last week by an autoniO' bile. The dog was a full blooded pointer a year old. Rev. W. L. VanNuys left Saturday evening for rendleton, his former home, to take charge of the funeral services of an Intimate friend. Miss Grace Taylor, superintendent of the Cottage Hospital, was a Port land visitor for several days last week, returning home Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hall are at Marshfield where they arrived a few days ago. A telegram received here states that their little son has the measles and that it will be necessary for them to remain away another week. Miss Hazel Smith who has been with the Hellbronner company has accepted the position of stenographer with the Butler Banking Company, and entered on her duties last week. Miss Mable Young, formerly with S. W. Stark, succeeds Miss Smith with Mr. Hellbronner. Sunday's Oregonlan contained the picture of T. B., M. V. and J. B Rand, well known here and who were soldiers during the civil war. The brothers participated In many of the prominent battles. They at tended the state encampment at Astoria last week. Hembree of McMiuvllie was here Thursday looking the valley over. Mr. Hembree Is well known in the Willamette valley, where he has been In the stationery business for many years. The steamer Teal commenced this week to leave Portland at 1 o'clock In the morning and will arrive here at 11 a. in. She will arrive up Mon days, Wednesdays and Fridays and go down the alternate days, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wilson who were married at Hood River June 11 will make their home In a new house erected by the groom In the Mill A district at Cooks, Wash.
