Permanent Road Work The ptart in permanent road building that has been made by the county commissioners and city council is an object lesson that will do more thaH anything that could have been done to insure the continuance of these projects. More than this, notwithstanding th fact that but a small part of the permanent road work that should be done has been accom plished, it is one of the best assets the town and valley has. It has caused residents, many of whom were opposed, to favor an exten sion of the work as fast as it can be done, and to know by prac tical experience the Wnefits of good country highways and per manent city roadways. In addi tion it is causing vifitors and intending investors to have a fa vorable impression of the progres siveness of the community. With the work in progress they know that it cannot be a great while be fore roads that will be good at all seasons of the year will traverse the valley and city, adding greatly to the comfort and convenience of country life and adding much to the value of property. The good roads movement has received such a favorable start at Hood River that there is no stop ping it and those who have taken the initiative should receive both cred't and the thanks of the community. Watching Taxation Following the organization in Seattle of a Taxpayer! League, with the object of watching public expenditures, eliminating extrava gance and reducing taxation, there is talk of organizing the various taxpayers' leagues of the state into a State Tax League, whose duty it will be to watch the state legisla ture with a careful eye, and also keep tabs on the state administra tion. The same idea is being taken up in other western states, and is in line with the general public sentiment that too much monej is being wasted by the gov erning powers, that tax rates are too high, and that only watchful ness by interested citizens can bring about economy. The log rolling methods of the state legis lature of Washington in 1909, which spent some ten millions of dollars, have come in for criticism and it is proposed to make it im possible for such extravagance to occur at the 1911 session. The new Seattle Taxpayers League is composed of men having big in terests there, with Jaeob Furth, president of the Seattle Electric Co. and a leading financier, as president of the league. A simi lar movement might well be started in other cities. Railroad Development The northwest is beginning to feel the influence of its new rail roads, if not in cut rates, at least in competition for the finest equip ment, most convenient schedules, and comfortable service. The ex cursion business has also begun to boom with the entry of the Oregon fc Washington into the field and the inauguration of iti Portland and Seattle service. This road will run an excursion from Puget ound, via Portland and the 0. II. & N. and Oregon Short Line to Yellowstone Park in July, and it promises to be the moat elaborate special train yet equipped for ex cursion business in the Northwest. This branch of railroading is tak ing on more prominence than ever bffore in this section. In recent years the railroads have been us ing all of their equipment to meet the demands of a constantly grow ing regular trallic, but with the (). & W. established in the field, the Milwaukee about to open its transcontinental service, and the old line buying new equipment, the Northwest may soon have such railroad facilities ns older etatt8 have long boasted. C ) PORTLAND GOSSiP C. I Portland. Or., June 14 (Special) My the end of the prvsent year, It Is promised that the most remote dis trict of Oregon, will be served by railroad transportation. Central Oregon will have two main lines, the Oregon Truuk anil the IKwchutes Killroad and the building of tlietw? roads Is of course the prime achieve ment of the yenr lu transportation. In addition, the Harrimau line to Tillamook will le completed and much progress will huve been made by the end of the year on the Natron Klamath road. This year the cost of contracts for the new railway lines and Interments lu this state will aggregate $,-to,0ofl,0Xt. Many other Important new projects will uudoubtedly be mapped out and started lefore lull. Iouglus county Is taking active steps In securing good roads. A county association has leen formed at Koseburg to boost the movement in that section of the state and the result of this actlou will le valuable. The organization was perfected through the efforts of the state as sociation and M. O. Elilrldge. the government road expert. Meetings are now held throughout Oregon In the interest of better highways and much progress is belug made. John H.
