GOOD APPLE CROP
The old apple deal Is winding; up
U'tter than expected eurller la tbe
season, says the I'roduce News, The
cool weather tlila spring enabled
luuuy holders to get out whole and
some have been able to make a fair
profit. Up-state apples are beld by
a few and the amount Is limited
The demand is still moderate and
the remaining light stocks are going
out at steady. to firm prices. Uald
wins. Kings and Greenings are bring
ing $'! 50 Oi $4.50, which are about
tbe highest prices of tbe season.
Greenings are almost gone, the few
remaining being of a mediocre
quality.
With tbe old apple deal nearlng Its
finish, Interest centers In prospects
for the new crop. According to
dealers and growers who have al
ready made an examination of con
ditions In tbe western New York
apple belt, there Is no reason for be
lieving that the crop will not be a
good one. Every two years apples
In this part of tbe state usually
yield a large crop. Last year the
crop was lelow tbe average In
quality, and for this reason opera
tors say that It would not be sur
prlxlng to see a good crop this year
The trees came through the severe
wiuter la excellent shape, and with
fuvorable weather la the spring blos
somed full. No damage was done
by frost la this locality, although In
some of the exposed sections some
Injury was reported following tbe
last freeze early In the month. The
absence of blossoms was seen only
In such orchards as were damaged
or received no care, or In specific
orchards where the trees bore heav
ily last year. Takeu as a whole,
tbe blossom la Westeru New York Is
good.
A prominent dealer who makes a
business of buying and selling tbe
fruit products of Western New York
gave the representative of The News
the following statement of present
conditions: "With the exception of
pears, we have never had such a
blossoming of fruit trees lu western
New York as this season. Tears did
not blossom full and did not fertil
ize. Therefore It seems as if they
will be a light crop. My reports
all point to a smaller crop of pears,
especially Hartletts, which did not
fertilize scarcely at all.
"Apples promise a good crop on
all varieties. Baldwins, Kings,
Greenings. Spys, Tweuty-ounce and
other kinds ought to do as well, or
letter than the crops of Inst year.
There were plenty of apples of all
kinds here last season but the qual
ity was poor. From my reports I
thluk the yield .will be as large as
last year. The quality will depend
entirely on growing conditions.
The blossom has been full and fertil
ization good.
"Weather conditions so far have
l)een favorable. What Is most to be
feared In the blossom, time Is
heavy ralu and excessive heat. So
far there has been neither. Italns
have leen light and the weather tins
tweu cool, with only a few warm
days, fool weather like we have
iK-en having the last two weeks will
be flue for the crop, because It will
allow the hlosnom to fertilize letter
on account of the extra time given
during Its blossoming period."

Reward for Dead Body
Henry M. Hammond, a rancher of
Douglas county, was drowned May
LM by falling with his horse from a
high Muff Into the Columbia river
near Harry, The body has not been
recovered, haying doubtless la-en
swept dotvn (he river Inr below the
scene of the accident. Surviving re
latives living In Seattle will pay a
lllieral reward to the finder of the
body. Tho dead mnn was about 40
years old. 5 feet 11 Inches In height,
and weighed about Id pounds. He
wns dressed In working garments
and wore high bice boots.

NEW NORTH BANK TRAIN
The Great Northern's new through
train between Portland and St. Paul
to be known as the "Oregoulan" Is
to be put la service June 12, accord
ing to an announcement made Fri
day by II. A. Jackson, the Portland
general agent of the road. This Is a
week earlier than the Inauguration
of the new service had been expected.
The "Oregonlan" leaves Portland
at 11 a. in. dally via the North Dank,
arriving lu Spokane at 10:30 p. m.. or
making the run to tbe Inland city
la 11 hours and 30 minutes. West
bound the train will leave Spokane
at 7:30 p. ni. and arrive In Portland
at 7 a. m. It will be a solid through
truln between Portland and the Min
nesota capltol.
On tbe same date train No. 4 of the
Spokane, Portland & Seattle will
begin carrying standard and tourist
sleepers which will be attached to
the Oriental Limited of the Great
Northern at Spokane and carried
through to Chicago. Through cars
from Chicago will be transferred
from the Oriental Limited at Spo
kane and brought through to Port
land on train No. 1 of the S. P. & S.
This will give the Great Northern a
doutile dally train service out of
Portland direct to the east.
Beginning on June 5 tbe trains No.
1 and 4 of the North Bank route will
use the Great Northern depot out of
Spokane Instead of the Northern Pa
cific as heretofore, and the "Oregon
lan will of course also use tbe Great
Northern station.

ber of the college community, from
the oldest and most learned peda
gogue to the youngest and most ver
dent freshman, worked on tbe
campus grading grouod, mowing
grass and cutting down trees, for It
was College Labor Day at the Ore
gon Agricultural College. Seven
hundred men, Including tbe members
of the faculty, responded to roll !all
at eight o'clock In tbe morning and
Immediately took up the work of
Improving and beautifying the cam
pus, which continued until five
o'clock In the afternoon. Many trees
were cut down, many yarns of dirt
moved and much rubbish cleaned
away. No partiality was shown In
the division of labor; professor and
students worked at tbe same tasks.
