It wan claimed by Miss Lake that
C. K. Markham, the enumerator In
question, had not exercised proper
tact in accosting the young woman
ami that she was by no means chiefly
to Maine. She was discharged from
custody, with the consent of Assist
ant District Attorney Kvaus.
Miss Lake was engaged In repair
Ins a Hume on her fruit farm, she
said, when ber attention was at
tracted by a remark, made by a
stranger, that she might hurt her
finger. She resented his familiarity
and when he began to propound
questions facetiously without ex
plaining why he asked them, she at
first refused to answer. Later, she
said, she gave all the Information ex
cept a part which related to her fi
nancial dealings. These omissions
were supplied later at the oflice of
Supervisor Bench.
Contrary to the report of the
enumerator, Miss Lake said she had
no hesitation In stating her exact
age. She did not understand that
the enumerator had a right to In
quire as to whether there was a
mortgage on her farm.
Miss Sarah E. I'eck, a member of
the faculty of t'ulon college, nenr
Lincoln, Neb., did not get off so easy.
She was Indicted by the federal
grand Jury on the charge that she
had willfully refused to give her age
to the ceusus enumerator or to an
swer questions as to whether she
had iHt'n married or divorced, was
fined $10 by United States District
Judge Munger, after she had entered
her voluntary appearance. Her age
has not yet been made public.

Sentenced For Life
The Jury in the ease of John M oran
who was Indicted for murder In the
second degree at The Dalles recently,
brought in a verdict of guilty as

The charge against Moran grew
out of his stabbing a man named
Larsen In The Dalles on April 7, last.
He was convicted upon the testi
mony of three young men, James
Mahoney, Joseph Richardson and
(jluy Fireston, who have been held
at The Dalles as witnesses by Sheriff
Chrlsman since the occurrence.
