All England and the world at large mours the death of the late sovereign. In summing up the life and reign of King Edward the Oregon Journal says: "The reign of the late Edward began January 22, 1901. It was brief compared with that of his mother, whose rule extended over a period of 64 years, seven mouths and two days. It bagan June 20, 1137, when she wa one month more than 18 years of age, and ended with her death, January 22, 1901, in her eighty-third year. Her marriage occurred February 10, 1810 to Trine Albert, son of the duka of Saxe-Coburg, who died September 14, 1861. '"There has been nothing in the reign of Edward VII to make him conspicuous in the world's affairs. The kingly office in Great Britain has been shorn of prerogatives until it exercises but little influ ence other than through moral su asion. It is largely a perfunctory position confined to court cere monials, state functions and lead ership in the social world. Sixty years as Prince of Wales made Edward admirably fitted to be a perfect type of monarch in these affairs. He had a tine dignity and a gentleness of purpose that perfectly suited the British mind and his popularity was extraordi nary. It was his good fortune to succeed to the throne at a time when the exalted reign of his splendid mother had, through two generations of benign rule, brought high respect among British people for their sovereign. It was also his good fortune that the high personal traits and the training of both his parents left an inevitable impress upon the character of Ed ward. This endowment made him a king who bore himself with a grace and dignity that won the world's respect and approval." poave to do a great ik'iil tn tuvuriu; publicity for Oregon throughout the ent and middle west. The Census The thirteenth census has bf-en taken, and while no city is com pletely satisfied that every one of its people have been counted, the enumerators and supervisors de clare that it is hardly possible that more than 1 or 2 per cent have been missed. Seattle is con fident of beating Portland by 25, 000, but may lie disappointed when the results are made known next September. Spokane and Tacoma each haTe more than 100, 000, and it is a question which one will take s eond rank in the state of Washington. The smaller cities of the northwest have all grown bo rapidly in ten years that it is impossible to even guess w hat or der they will appear in when ranked according to population. The sale of the hohltugs of the Northwestern Corporation proper tlee throughout Oregon, Washington and Idaho to II. M. Hyllesoy & Co., large eastern Investors, announced recently, was confirmed durlug the past week when the final options were closed la I'hlladelphla. This menus the coining of a great amount of new capital to the racltlc uorth west where It will lie used developing water powers gas and electric plants. Hill and party to Portland during the past week ban been of great significance. Ac companied by railroad officials Louis W. Hill has left Portland to make a tour of the state. He will cross cen tral Oregon and see for himself what the tonnage possibilities of that great region are. After this trip It Is expected that a definite announce ment will be made as to the expected east and west lines across the state. While In Portland Mr. Hill talked freely and his statements mean much for Oregon. He confirmed his pur chase of the Oregon Electric and I'nlted liall ways, Interurbun systems running out of Portland, and snys be will extend them down the Willamette valley. He also confirmed his pur rbaae of the Pacific & Eastern but snld It wbi yet too early to talk of a connecting road clear across the state. The Deschutes road will, of course, go ahead as fast as possible, be said, and Itesldes nil this railroad activity In this state Mr, Hill pro- lectures will be given under the aus pices of the State Good Koads Asso ciation and a decided Impetus to the work of the organization will prob ably result.
