Mitt Kate Barnard, State Commission er of Charities and Correction. There Is nothing aew in a woman's being called au "angel." Must of us know women who either are angels or are called such. But besides Flor ence Nightingale, the famous "angel of the Crimea," It Is hard to reonll any one woman who Is known far and wide as an angel. Miss Kate Bar nard, the "angel of Oklahoma." comes pretty near being the only American woman to whom the title is applied. Miss Barnard has earned her title of angel fairly. As state commissioner of charities and correction of Oklahoma she has labored hard for the ioir and unfortunate and defective of her state. . , ' i ' MISS KATC BARNARD. She Is the only elected woman ex ecutive head of any state department of charities and holds her otUce with the full approval of tbo men of the state, as Is showu ty her election by a plurality of 4,000 votes over her male competitor. As Is well known, Oklahoma, the newest state In the Union, has advanced Ideas la govern nieut. Some of them are due to the teachings and preachings of Miss Bar nard. "A Tery small woman with a Tory large Job" Is the way oue newspaper writer described Miss Barnard not long ago. And he was quite riglit Not that Oklahoma has more than It share of people in need of the uilnta tratlons of the charities . and correc tions commissioner, but that Its peo pie In their eagerness for advance along the Hues of helpfulness toward one's fellow men are determined to make experiments In sociology until they hit upon solutions for the Ills that alHIct mankind. All of these things, of course, must fall under Miss Bar nard's eye. So, you see, her work In the state alone is enough to keep ber busy. In addition, she Is greatly In demand as a ieaker at the conven tions held throughout the country at which Ideas In sociology are discussed. She Is a good speaker, and ber earnest ness and devotion to ber work com mand attention wherever she goes. Miss Barnard has traveled much and has visited most of the cities of the country In her efforts to find out "bow the other half lives." It Paid to Read the Bible. If you have an old family Bible In your bouse don't neglect it. In 1874 an eccentric old lady bequeathed to her nephew. John Marsh of Washington,- a Bible which was a sort of heir loom In the family. She was wealthy, but she left her nephew only the old Bible, which he laid away on a shelf, where It gathered the dust of many years, unopened. Not long ago there was an argument concerning one of the psalms. Mr. Marsh held one view. His pretty daughter. Miss Daisy, held another. "I'll look In the Bible, papa. and prove you're wrong," she said. So she took down the neglected book. opened it and found bonds to the value of $10,000 which the eccentric aunt had placed In the book for her nephew. "Daisy, yon really are a dal!" exclaimed papa. "Hereafter we must read that good old book." Real Estate Bulletin $7( 7000 cr c'OB to town. New home end barn. 4 acres orchard, balance berries, clover.
