CITY REALTY
It is gratifying to know that a
start will soon be mad toward
providing some relief in the way
.f apartments for Hood Rivera
rapidly growing iopulaiion a an
nounced in the building of an
apartment hou?e here. Scarcity
of dwellings and apartments has
long been a vexed question here.
The city d'es not lack fur ample
building space with lots at a reaa
onable figure and rents mu?t be ad
mitted to be on a paying basis.
If the city would provide homes
for the incoming tid of jopula
tion, quarters for it to live in
should be prorided speedily. This
year will demonstrate with alarm
ing rapidity the increased number
of j-op!e it will tak to auccessful
ly handle the products of the Tal-
ley and also to provide help for
business establishments. City
realty to-day presents an oppor
tunity for investment that may be
realized too late to-morrow.
KEEPING THE CITY CLEAN
The city government and organ
izations interested in haing the
city cleaned up and kept clean are
doing all they can to further the
movement. In another column
the city marshal calls attention to
an ordinance which makes it a
misdemeanor to wilfully litter the
streets with paper and other rub
bish and states that he will, from
now on, deal with offenders accord
ing to the law. We do not believe
this will be necessary and we trust
it will not. Perhaps we are all a
little careless in this particular.
It is simply a matter of thinking
before we throw stuff in the street
that gives it an untidy appearance,
and of depositing it where it will be
carted off or burned. Hood River
pople are not lacking in civic
pride and we lelieve that they will
rise to the occasion and make the
city the cleanest in the state.
THE CALL OF THE SOIL
Speaking of labor scarcity, a
Hood River resident advertised in
the Oregonian recently for a man
to work on his ranch and got 57
answers by mail the first day.
Another went him one better. Ad
vertised in the same paper and
had applicants inquire at his hotel.
When he returned from a walk
the next morning both rooms and
the hall were filled with aspirants
to go to work on a fruit ranch at
Hood River, lome of them it is
stated were drawing salaries from
$50 to 175 per month, .and were
ready to aeparate themselves from
soft oity life and hike to the farm.
What can be offered in explana
tion of this? Nothing except that
the call of the soil is doing its
work and man is returning to his
natural vocation of tilling Mother
Earth.
