But the beat story regarding tbe poet's handwriting that I hare heard came recently from the secretary of a well known local club. It seems that the club desire-: t bare the poet address the organization at an annual affair at which an elaborate program had been prepared. Tbe sec retary addressed a letter to Joaquin telling blm of the purpose of the Jinks and requesting bis co-operation. II wus scheduled for a recitation. In due time there came an answer from tbe poet. It was In his own hand and covered four pages. In Tain the secretary pored over the manu script. He turned It over to tbe presi dent, the board of directors and the members in turn, but all failed to de cipher the scrawl. The question be fore tbe club was. Has Miller accepted or has be declined? Tbe secretary finally took the mat ter into bU own bands and addressed the following note to Miller: My Dear Mr. Miller Your lettar re ceived, but I have been unable to deter mine whether you have accepted or de clined our Invitation. If you will be prea ant on the date mentioned will you kindly make a cross on the bottom of thia letter? If It will be Impossible tor you to appear will you kindly draw a circle? In due time tbe letter came back marked as requested, but tbe secre tary could not decide whether It was a cross or a circle. San Francisco Call. Don't Seek Trouble. Dispel that prophetic gloom which dives Into futurity to extract sorrow from days and years to come and which considers its own unhappy vi sions as the decrees of "Providence. We know nothing of tomorrow; our business Is to be good and happy to day. Sydney Smith. A Popular Rola. Mrs. Rogers had tbe barrel of russet apples placed In tbe attic because tbey were not quite ripe enough to eat, and she warned her three boys, whose ages range from Ave to eleven years, not to touch tbem. Then one rainy day when she sought the attic to get something from trunk she came full upon ber sons sur rounded by apple cores. At her ap proach two of the boys drew closer together, but the third, a little distance "WHATEVKH ARB TOO" VOISOT off, who lay on his stomach contented ly munching an apple, apparently paid no attention to his mother's entrance. "Jack! Henry: Willie'" she exclaim ed reproachfully. "Whatever are you doing? And those apples! Didn't I tell you not to touch them?" "Yes, mamma," replied Jack, the eldest, "but we're not really eating them. We're acting the garden of Eden. Willie and I are Adam and Eve. aud Henry, over there, is the ser pent trying to lead us to our downfall by showing us how good the apples are. "But," begau tbe mother as sternly as she was able, "you two must have beeu eating apples. Henry basn't done it all. I see as many as ten cores around you." "Oh, yeth," returned Willie, the youngest, "we've all been taking turnth being the therpent." Green's Fruit Grower. Mistaken Identity.
