PORTLAND REALTY VALUES
An instance of the advance of
realty values in Portland during
the past 60 years was brought up
this week when the corner at Fifth
and Morrison streets sold for 1405
000 and an additional IllOOOO
was paid for the transfer of the
leases. Peter W. Severson, who
sold the property, owned it for 61
years. It was literally forced
upon him as apparently of little
valu. He was owed a week's
wages by the owner of the property
who also borrowed Severson 's shot
gun and lost it. The man who
hald the lot offered the property
in lieu of the week's wages and the
missing weapon. Severson de
murred, but finally was forced to
accept the lot to cover thp double
debt.
JAPANESE ROSES
Japan, showing its friendly feel
ing toward Oregon and the Pacific
coast, has sent 170 bushes of na
tive roses to be set out in the parks
and public squares of Portland on
February 22, the official rose
planting day, when the metropolis
will make a holiday and hold
special exercises. The gift is a
gracious one and is much appreci
ated by Rose Festival officials. A
number of foreigu nations have
been heard from, each contribut
ing native roses to be planted here
on Washington's birthday. It is
expected by rosarians that the
bushes will thriva in their adopted
country as well as in their own
clime.
OREGON MERCHANTS
The annual convention of the
Oregon Retail Merchant's Ass'n at
Eugene during the past week was
a triumph. It is composed of up-to-date
merchants whose aim is to
serve the consumers with first
cla'-s merchandise at moderate
prices. Itnring the discussion at
the various sessions of the conven
tion, they insisted on pure fod
products and the trend of the
gathering was toward Ix-tter citi
zenship. State wide interest is shown in
the development congress to be
held at Kugene February 11 and
12, Commonwealth Day, the fifty
first anniversary of the admission
of Oregon as a state, will be cele
brated on February 12. (Questions
of general interest, such as the
conservation of the state's re
sources, extension of irrigation,
eountry conditions and educa
tional subjects will be taken up.

A Common Cold
We claim that If catching cold
could be avoided some of the most
dangerous and fatal diseases would
never ! heard of, A cold often forms
a culture bed for germs of Infectious
diseases. Consumption, pneumonia,
dlptherla and scarlet fever, four of
the most dangerous and fatal dis
eases, are of this class. The culture
bed formed by the cold favors the
development ot the germs of these
diseases that would not otherwise
And lodgment. There Is little dan
ger, however, of any of these diseases
lielug contracted when a good ex
lectorant cough medicine like Chain
lnrlaln's Cough Hemedy Is used. It
cleans out these culture Iteds that
favor the development of the germs
of these diseases. That Is why this
remedy Is proving so universally suc
cessful in preventing pneumonia. It
not ouly cures your cold quickly, but
minimizes the risk of contracting
these dangerous diseases. For sale

Dr. Hosch came here about six

spoke of the high regard of the party
for Dr. Hosch.
During the evening J. P. Lucas was
called upon for a few remarks and
In well chosen words expressed the
sentiment of the assembled company
In wishing (Jod-speed to the doctor

who has certainly done her part In
assisting the doctor In his work for
humanity at the Lock and no one
will leave here In many years to

hearty appreciation of the whole
community as do the doctor and his

and friendship, and said he was so
glad they had not waited until he
wan dead to say what they felt.
