15. F. Westfall had a tin rrow escape
from death one day last week, while
working about the planer at thesaw
mill. His clothing was caught in
the pulley on the counter shaft, that
wan revolving at luM) revolutions per
minute, and he was drawn Into the
machinery in such a way that he
was enabled to get hold of the planer
tied and bold on until his clothing
gave way. In the meantime a belt
had come loose and nearly pounded
lilin to a Jelly. While there were no
bones broken, It will be some time
liefore he will be able to get around
again.
W. F. Cash was In Portland a
couple of days this week.
H. It. Adams, who has been with
his uncle In the I'nderwood store for
nearly a year, lias moved back to
Cascade Lis'ks where his father Is In
business. .
The Shepard tract of V2 acres was
sold to F. I. Morrison of Yankton,
N.I). The sale was made by W, !

day.

The big dolphin at the mouth of
the White Salmon, consisting of sev
en big piles, was shaved off smooth
and clean by the Ice Sunday morn
ing, just as if It had been made of so
many straws. The Sliunious came
up from the Locks and picked up the
boom sticks and towed them back to
safe anchorage.
W. U. nine and E. It. Cobb are
wearing u smile that won't come off
these days, for they have at last got
ten rid of the Hood Uiver carpenter
outfit that have leen going through
the motions of building theiuahouse
during the past few months.
We understand that the Cortland

Miss Agnes Evans died at the hunie
of her parents In irand View district
Sunday morning after a lingering
illness. She was taken toCorhett,
Ore., for burial.
A goodly number of Modern Wood
men and friends spent two days this
week helping their brother ami
neighbor E, J. Bailey put up a new
house for his mother, who had the
misfortune to lose her home by (ire
the first of January. The boys all
worked with a will, and the family
expect to move In next week.

Kobt. Hardwick left during the
week for a visit to his old home in
the east.
Now that the snow has somewhat
disappeared the real estate men are
getting busy and several large sales
have been reported during the week.
J. T. Davenport Is erecting a tem
porary barn on his lots at the edge
of town. The hard wind storm of
Thursday night blew his first frame
work down, but nothing daunted
he went to work making matters
right again.

The Ladies' Aid will hold their reg
ular meeting at the home of Mrs. E.
E. Lage Wednesday afternoon of
this week.
Mrs. J. (). Mark Is visiting her
daughter In Salem this. week.
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mohr went to
Portland last week In response to a
call from their son Alphonse, who
was 111 for n. short time tint has fully
recovered
C. E. Sproat returned from the
east Thursday evening.
Mr. Eaton, who purchased the

ago, has recently sold for a good
consideration.
King Benton and family have re
turned to their home after an ab
sence of several weeks.

spending a few weeks In Portland
and vicinity, returned home the lat
ter part of the week.
The W. C. T. U. held their regular
meeting at the home of Mrs. J. A.
Hunt Friday afternoon with a good
attendance.
Mr. and Mrs. Win. Kerr have sold
