REOROANIZINO THE PARTY
In commenting on the assem
bliea and effort to reorganize the
Republican party in Oregon the
Oregonian says editorially:
"The Republican party of Ore
gon as an organization, has fallen
into a state of innocuous desue
tude. The go-as-you-please plu
rality primary has killed it.
Question now Is how to revive it
The method is the assembly con
vention, for suggestion of candi
dates. The primary law remains
in force and must be followed. But
it is necessary, absolutely, to any
successful political action, that
there shall be conference and
agreement on representative men
as candidates for leading offices.
The self-nominating plurality
scheme is death, not only to par
ties, but to party objects and pur
poses. The self-nominated candi
date represents no body but him
self with the possible addition of
a small group about him. He can
not be elected. He ought not to
be. His little plurality represents
no large body of men, no princi
pal, no party.
"But now there is to be an effort
on the part of Republicans of Ore
gon to revive and to restore party
organization. It is silly and use
less to pretend anything in the
name of a party when there is no
party, and there can be no party
without organization, and no or
ganization except through repre
sentative effort. The assembly or
convention plan will meet this re
quirement. It will engage and in
clude and represent the heart and
soul and spirit and purpose of the
Republican party. There will be
ome dissenters, most probably,
followers of Jonathan Bourue. But
is he a man to be followed in any
thing? However, his following
will consist only of the few who
want office and expect to get office
through him.
"The Republican party of Ore
gon will make an effort to pull it
self out of the mud and mire of
defeat. It will form au organiza
tion. It will hold conventions and
recommend candidates for the pri
maries. They who may not like
it, of course, will be at liberty to
act with 'the gang of Jonathan
Bourne and George Chamberlain.
'The gang' doubtless will predict
defeat of the Republican effort.
Very well, then; matters can't be
worse, in that event, for the Re
publican party, its purposes and
principles, than they are now. Can
there be anything worse, from the
Republican party's point of view,
than the continued election of
Democratic governors and senators
and mayors of Portland? A party,
even in defeat, if it have definite
objects, may stand for something;
but what can a party stanl for
when it juggles, or is juggled with,
to such extent that it is pledged
in the outcome to election of its
bitterest opponents to highest rep
resentative offices? No, no; the
Republican party of Oregon now
will cast out 'the gang' these shy
sters in poltties, these false pre
tenders on one side professing
non partisanship, for a sinister pur
pose, and even registering as Re
publicans to promote the decep
tion, yet partisan Democrats al
ways; on the other hand, men
professing to be Republicans, yet
binding themselves to the election
of Democrats to highest positions,
and actually doing it. Many, mis
led, have acted with 'the gang'
hitherto, who, it is believed, will
act with it no more. Besides, if
Oregon is to be a Democratic state,
let it be so. But let us Lave no
false pretenses about it.
