    ‘Butterfl y Mindfulness,’
by Andrew Puzauskas
As the wind blows
Where it sits now and clings
So the butterfl y goes
Slower now its wings are
Sometimes directly to the fl ower,
Still opening and closing then
Or else in a circular round about way
Vertically folding upright and
It goes zig-zagging about
Resting now quite still
Pushed and tossed here and there
It’s only focus is upon
It seems to be helpless and yet
The sweetness of the nectar...
Always reaches the swaying target
RIGHT: Papilio oregonius, the Oregon swallowtail butterfl y.

and I like the idea of dropping my keys
The waves brush gently
through the grate. Never mind the ocean.
along the sand
I want my keys gone. I would risk them
Each surge rolls farther
being swallowed. Tangled in the throes
onto the land
of runoff away from my coat pocket
Shore birds scavenge
and moving farther as I stand here,
and do their dance,
looking down at the stenciled warning
Then avoid the next wave
“No Dumping” and yet that’s just what
from the sea’s great expanse
I would do. Expanse by way of manhole,
Bull kelp and fl otsam
uncovered and recovered in silt.
punish the shore
Those rooms they open, one key
Seagulls and plovers
per one door. How I’ve sorted them
bob under for more
onto diff erent rings – car, work, home
The footprints I leave
The chain has worn the cloth patterns
are not timeless for me,
of my lanyard: polka dots fray,
For when I look back
striped edges curl away from their hem
they’ve returned to the sea
