Under coach Tom Wilson, the Astoria softball team made the state playoff s in 1982 and 1983, when the Oregon School Activities Association had just two levels (AAA and AA-A). Playing a schedule of big school opponents, the Lady Fishermen of 1983 defeated Sheridan 4-2 in a fi rst round game, before an 8-2 loss to La Salle in the quarterfi nals. 2022 COWAPA ALL-LEAGUE SOFTBALL TEAM Author, artist, activist, aquanaut. Thomas Nesbitt Bur- gess Jr., a former Astoria resident, has passed away peace- fully in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he grew up. The son of Thomas N. Burgess Sr. and Halean Proc- Thomas Burgess Jr. tor Burgess, he is sur- vived by his brother, John C. Burgess, and his wife, Mikki Bur- gess, and three neph- ews, John Jr., Stephen and Jeremy. He is also survived by his longtime companion and Astoria resident, Rosalyn Edelson. Tom’s vocation was advertising, as a creative director for several of the indus- try’s top agencies. An avid scuba diver and certifi ed hard hat diver, he combined his creative talent with his love for the sea to advocate for protections for the oceans and the oceans’ inhabitants. He authored, in addition to his other writings, “Take Me Under the Sea,” a defi nitive work encompassing the history of undersea art, photography and early motion picture production. He was a frequent contributor to His- torical Diving Society’s worldwide publi- cation, and a sometimes unconventional contributor to The Daily Astorian. Tom served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a cryptographer. As he wished, his ashes will be scattered at sea. In lieu of fl owers and condolences, do something positive for the oceans, which support all life on this planet. We suggest the Oceanic Preservation Society or an environmental charity of your choice.
