CommuniCare was started by Harold and Arlene Schnitzer 25 years ago with the dream of
empowering teens to become active citizens and has grown to serve sixty student groups
under the leadership of their son, Jordan Schnitzer. Over the course of the school year,
students learn about important community issues, evaluate nonprofits doing amazing work,
and decide which to fund. It has been our great privilege to work alongside inspiring teachers
and students from the North Coast to Eastern Oregon. The passion and commitment of
these young people should give each of us tremendous hope for the future.
“The grantmaking process is very special to me because
it’s a chance to meet the people trying to improve our
community. I really enjoy getting to know these organizations
and their goals. I can’t believe how lucky the participants in
CommuniCare are to get to make such a huge difference as
young people. It’s a gift to us and our futures!”
