Fisheries professor to present
on marine heat waves
ASTORIA — Jessica Miller, professor
of fisheries, wildlife and conservation sci-
ences at Oregon State University, will host
a virtual presentation on marine heatwaves
on Thursday at 7 p.m.
As leader of the Marine and Anadro-
mous Fisheries Ecology Lab in Newport,
Miller’s research focuses on how climate
variation affects Columbia River Chinook
salmon and Alaska Pacific Cod. For this
presentation, she will focus on heat waves’
effects on coastal fish species.

Ten Fifteen Theater to host
volunteer open house
ASTORIA — The Ten Fifteen Theater
will host a volunteer open house event on
Saturday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
This event will provide an overview
along with logistics for potential theater
volunteers. Discussion topics will include
costume and set design, lighting, sound
operation, house management and more.
It’s an opportunity to connect with theater
directors and community members.
This event is free and open to the pub-
lic. Light refreshments will be provided.

Three Leg Torso to perform
in Cannon Beach
CANNON BEACH — Chamber music
quartet Three Leg Torso will perform on Sat-
urday at 7:30 p.m. at the Coaster Theatre
Playhouse.
Combining music from the vio-
lin, accordion, saxophone, mallets, bass
and other instruments, the group, which
expanded from a trio to a quartet, will per-
form an eclectic selection of chamber
music, tango and other music styles.
Admission for the show is $25. Dis-
counts are available for guests at qualify-
ing Cannon Beach accommodations. Doors
open at 7 p.m. Proof of COVID vaccina-
tion and masks required for all attendees.

Flavel House offers afternoon
of Victorian era lawn games
ASTORIA — The Flavel House
Museum will host Old Fashioned Fun
& Games, an event featuring activities
enjoyed by Victorian children, on Saturday
and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The afternoon will feature outdoor
games including badminton and croquet, as
well as a pie eating contest and sack race.
Other activities available will include hoop
and stick, ball and cup, stilts and rope mak-
ing. Kids can also enjoy corn dogs, lemon-
ade and prizes.

Appelo Archive Center
celebrates founder’s
100th birthday
NASELLE, Wash. — The Appelo
Archive Center, a museum dedicated to
the history of Naselle and Deep River, will
celebrate what would have been the 100th
birthday of its founder this month.
Carlton Appelo died in 2019 at the age
of 96 after a career in the telecommuni-
cations industry, which included serving
as president of Western Wahkiakum Tele-
phone Co. He traveled extensively and
worked to preserve links to his Finnish
heritage. The center’s displays and con-
tents reflect this with an emphasis on gene-
alogy as well as books and artifacts from
Scandinavia.
The event will feature free cake and
refreshments and a display about Appelo’s

Astoria High School
presents ‘Cinderella’
ASTORIA — Astoria High School will
present a spring production of Rodgers and
Hammerstein’s “Cinderella,” opening on
Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
The musical will feature nearly two
dozen student thespians, working from a
contemporary take on the classic tale. The
show will feature beloved songs and new
additions, as well as an updated script.
Saturday’s performance will be pre-
ceded by “Paint the Peninsula,” a stu-
dent art show benefiting Bikers Against
Child Abuse, at 4:30 p.m. Performances
will also be held on May 20 and May 21
at 6:30 p.m., as well as a matinee perfor-
mance on May 21 at 1:30 p.m.
Admission for the show is $10 for
adults and $5 for children, tickets will be
available at the door. Concessions will also

RAYMOND, Wash. — Contemporary
bluegrass group The Special Consensus
will perform at the Raymond Theatre as
part of the Sunday Afternoon Live series
on Sunday at 3 p.m.
With a polished, original sound that
gathers inspiration from both traditional
bluegrass and innovative techniques, band
members Greg Cahill, Dan Eubanks, Greg
Blake and Michael Prewitt have been
touring internationally for decades.
