B4 THE ASTORIAN • THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 2022 State’s annual wolf count shows anemic growth By KALE WILLIAMS The Oregonian Oregon’s wolf population saw its lowest growth rate in years in 2021, with just two more of the canids observed in the state than the previous year. That’s according to the state’s annual wolf report, released last week , which said there were a min- imum of 175 wolves throughout the state. The report also noted that at least 26 wolves died in Oregon last year, most of them killed by humans. The number of packs and breed- ing pairs also decreased, by one and two. Despite the anemic growth rate, Roblyn Brown, a wolf biologist with the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife, said the outlook for wolves in Oregon remains pos- itive as they continue to populate new areas of the state. “The wolf count did not increase as much over the past year as in pre- vious years, and a higher number of mortalities that included the loss of breeding adults certainly played a role,” Brown said in a statement. “Despite this, we are confi dent in the continued health of the state’s wolf population as they expand in distribution across the state and show a strong upward population trend.” Two local volunteers recognized by state for work in heritage preservation The Astorian Two local volunteers were rec- ognized by the state for their con- tributions to heritage preservation. Robert Zimmerling, a vol- unteer with Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, and Eric Williams, a volunteer with the Astoria Library, will receive Ore- gon Heritage Excellence Awards during a virtual event on Thursday at 5 p.m. The public event is part of the 2022 v irtual Oregon Heritage C onference.
