Black Lake Fishing Derby
offers outdoor fun
ILWACO, Wash. — The Ilwaco Parks
and Recreation Commission will host its
annual Black Lake Fishing Derby event on
Saturday from 7 to 10 a.m.
This event is a fun opportunity for kids
ages 2 to 14 to get outdoors and have a
chance to win exciting prizes. Breakfast
will be provided by New Life Church at
7 a.m. The final fish weigh-in will be at
10 a.m., followed by a lunch with hot dogs
and other refreshments, plus awards and a
prize drawing.
Derby participants will receive a free
t-shirt designed by logo contest winner
Makenzie Williams, a second grader at
Long Beach Elementary School in Long
Beach while supplies last.
This event is free, though attendees are

Cultural coalition to present
on nonprofit funding
SALEM – The Clatsop County Cultural
Coalition will give a virtual presentation
focused on funding and development pro-
grams on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
This event will take place as part of the
statewide “Conversations with Funders and
Partners” presentation series organized by the
Oregon Cultural Trust.
Last year, the trust awarded over $3.2 mil-
lion in statewide grants for cultural nonprofit
organizations. Among this event’s discus-
sion topics will be the trust’s Cultural Devel-
opment Program, which supports projects
extending across four categories, “access,
preservation, creativity and capacity.”
This event is free and aimed at grant seek-
ers looking to discuss projects and program-
ming. Capacity is limited and attendees are

North Coast Symphonic Band
continues season at Liberty Theatre
ASTORIA – The North Coast Symphonic
Band will continue its 42nd season with
“Movies, Musicals, Marches and More,” a
performance paying tribute to the history of
cinema and performance, at 2 p.m. on Sunday
at the Liberty Theatre.
Retired music educator Terry Dahlgren,
who taught for many years in Seaside schools,
will guest conduct for this performance.
The concert will include favorites from
modern films like “How to Train Your
Dragon” and “Music for a Darkened Theater”
alongside theater selections from titles like
“Les Miserables” and marches like Karl L.
King’s “Circus Days.”

Singer-songwriter duo to perform at Liberty Theatre
ASTORIA – Singer-songwriter duo Jef-
frey Martin and Anna Tivel will perform at
Liberty Theatre on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Martin and Tivel, both based in Port-
land, are keen and poetic observers of the
everyday. Martin’s most recent album,
“One Go Around,” fuses Americana themes
with journalistic lyricism, while Tivel’s
latest release “Small Believer,” features
observant lyrics and guitar accompaniment
by Austin Nevins.
Admission for the show is $25. Doors

ASTORIA – The Coastal Observation and
Seabird Survey Team, a University of Wash-
ington citizen science project, will host a train-
ing session for community members interested
in seabird observation at Clatsop Community
College on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Session attendees will learn about local
marine bird species and data collection strat-
egies as preparation to monitor a stretch of
shoreline on a monthly basis, helping to mea-
sure regional seabird mortality.
The survey team, which partners with fed-
eral, state and tribal agencies, nonprofit orga-
nizations and coastal communities, currently
consists of over 1,000 independent volunteers
contributing essential data to further marine
conservation efforts.
This workshop is free and open to all. Vol-
unteers need no prior experience to conduct
surveys. Attendees must provide proof of

of media are invited to participate in the 12th
annual Astoria Open Studios Tour, with a reg-
istration deadline of May 1.
To participate, artists must open their stu-
dios to the public during the event, which
runs on July 30 and 31 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Artists must reside or have a studio space
within the Astoria region.
The Astoria Open Studios Tour seeks to
promote local arts and encourage connections
between residents, visitors and artists. Par-
ticipating artists retain all sales made during
the event, and are also invited to submit work
to be included in a July group exhibit at the
Astoria Visual Arts Gallery.
Participation in the tour costs $25 for Asto-
ria Visual Arts members and $40 for non-
member artists. The tour will be limited to 50
