A2 THE ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, APRIL 12, 2022 DOCKSIDE IN BRIEF Candidates’ forum set for April 19 A candidates’ forum is planned for April 19. The forum, scheduled from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Clatsop Community College’s Patriot Hall, will feature candidates for Clatsop County commis- sion, the state House and state Senate and U.S. Congress. Chris Breitmeyer, the college president, will serve as moderator. The forum is being held by the American Asso- ciation of University Women Astoria Branch in collaboration with the college, The Astorian and Coast Community Radio. The event will be livestreamed and broadcast later by Coast Community Radio. Voters urged to mail ballots early for May election Voters who plan to mail their ballots for the May 17 election are encouraged to do so early to ensure the ballots are counted. Mailed ballots must now be postmarked by Election Day. But there is no guarantee that ballots dropped into a mailbox after the box’s final pickup time on May 17 will be postmarked that day, Clat- sop County said in a statement. Oregon changed the law to help ensure bal- lots postmarked on Election Day and received by county clerks within seven days would be counted. Voters can also drop ballots off at several drop boxes by 8 p.m. on Election Day. The drop boxes are located outside the county office at Ninth and Exchange streets in Astoria, at Warrenton, Gear- hart, Seaside and Cannon Beach city halls, at Knappa High School and Jewell School. Voters must be registered by April 26. The county plans to start mailing out ballots on April 27. The county clerk’s office plans to livestream the ballot-counting process. This will include the ver- ification of ballot signatures starting roughly May 2 and the counting of ballots starting on May 13. — The Astorian Photos by Lydia Ely/The Astorian TOP TO BOTTOM: Astoria’s fi rst cruise ship of the season, the Koningsdam, docked on Friday.
