The Astorian
When it comes to com-
bined points, the Astoria

competed in and won sev-
eral events Saturday at
Tillamook’s Mark Dean
Invitational.
Attended by 16 regional
schools, including 6A Glen-
coe, Astoria fi nished second
in both the girls and boys

Banks won the boys
team title with 98.5 points,
ahead of Philomath (91),

Knappa, 13-3
The Astorian
The Gaston softball team
pulled off the fi rst big upset
of the season in Northwest
League play Tuesday after-
noon, as the Greyhounds
beat the previously unde-
feated Knappa Lady Log-
gers, 13-3.
The game was played at
Yamhill-Carlton.
Off ensively,
Gaston’s
Lexi Fern was 4-for-4, while
teammate Haylee Johnstone
had two doubles and drove
in three runs. Grace Smith
was 3-for-4. It was the fi rst
loss of the season for the sev-
enth-ranked Loggers (5-1).
Tillamook edges
Astoria, 2-1
The Astorian
In a pitcher’s duel Tues-
day afternoon at Tillamook,
the Cheesemakers did just
enough to hold off Astoria,
2-1, in a Cowapa League
baseball opener.
Tillamook pitcher Parker
McKibbin tossed a two-hit-
ter with seven strikeouts and
three walks, while Astoria’s
Niko Boudreau scattered fi ve
hits with seven strikeouts and
one walk.
The diff erence came on
four Astoria errors, which
helped the Cheesemakers
score one unearned run in the
fi fth inning, when the Fisher-
men committed three of their
four errors.
With one out in the top
of the seventh, Boudreau
reached on a two-base error
by Tillamook, then scored on
a single by Sven Johnson, who
fi nished with both Astoria hits.
With a runner at second,
McKibbin retired the fi nal
Fisherman batter to end the
game.
Valiant golfers
top Seaside boys
The Astorian
Seaside’s
Carson
Kawasoe fi nished atop the
fi eld for the second time
in two events this season,
as the senior shot 71 in the
windy conditions at Gear-
hart Golf Links on Monday,
in a Cowapa League match
vs. Valley Catholic.
The Valiants defeated the
Gulls in the team scoring,
343-385.
While Kawasoe fi nished
one-under par, Seaside’s
Riley Wunderlich carded
a 102, followed by Carson
Bates (103) and Carter Per-
rigo (109). Ever Sibony (113)
was Seaside’s fi fth golfer.
“Carson played a solid
round today with three bird-
ies and only two bogies on
his card,” said Seaside coach
Jim Poetsch. “That is a great
round in today’s conditions.
The wind was gusting above
50 miles per hour when we
teed off , and heavy rain hit
them a couple of holes in.”
The wind remained, but
it did not aff ect the Valiants,
whose top four golfers shot
under 90. Lucas Howell led
with an 80, followed by D.J.
Romano (86) and Ryoma
Lane (88).

ers” rallied with two runs
in the fi fth and tacked
on one in the sixth for a
5-4 win over Gaston in a
Northwest League base-

at Tapiola Park.
The victory keeps the
Loggers’ league win streak
intact, at 52 in a row.
Gaston scored three

and kept the Greyhounds

Children’s teeth are very important
to the health of the child and
the development of the dental jaw, and
forming permanent teeth. Baby teeth
not only give the child chewing function
and cute esthetics, but also serve an
important role in the formation of the
jaw. Premature loss of primary teeth can
adversely affect the jaw growth, position
and timing of the eruption of permanent
teeth, and if badly decayed or infected,
be a source of pain, sickness, and risk
to other teeth. Please have your dentist
evaluate your child’s “baby teeth.”
