Beach cleanup set for Monday The Portland Cello Project will perform ‘Purple Reign,’ a Prince tribute show. Portland Cello Project to perform tribute show WARRENTON – Join the staff of Lewis and Clark National Historical Park in clean- ing up 1 mile of beach by Sunset Beach State Recreation Area on Monday from noon to 2 p.m. Volunteers will have the opportunity to enjoy a day at the beach, coinciding with the s pring e quinox, while learning about the Oregon Shores CoastWatch p rogram. Park staff and volunteers will pick up trash and make observations, reporting natu- ral changes and human impacts to the shore. This event is open to all who wish to par- ticipate. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers should expect to walk 1 to 2 miles on sandy terrain, and are asked to bring gloves, water, snacks, walking shoes and appropriate gear for weather conditions. Fire starting, candle making class off ered ASTORIA — Lewis and Clark National Historical Park will off er a free course on fi re starting and can- dle making to high school students on Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Led by park ranger Izzy Sanchez, the course will teach students about fi re safety, techniques and candle making. This course is part of the park’s Klahowya Youth Volunteer program, which off ers opportunities for teens to learn living history skills, then com- mit four hours of their time to demon- strate their learned skill during the summer season. The session is limited to 10 partic- ipants. Those interested must pre-reg- ister with the park, and will be asked to bring lunch. Masks and social dis- tancing are required. Cellists focus on unexpected tunes and venues ASTORIA – The Liberty Theatre pres- ents “Purple Reign,” a tribute concert to musician Prince from the Portland Cello Project, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Portland Cello Project, an alt-classi- cal ensemble under the artistic direction of Douglas Jenkins, aims to bring the cello to unexpected places, playing nontraditional music alongside classical works. The ensemble is joined for this event by musicians Saeeda Wright and Tyrone Hendrix, both of whom have worked with Prince. Wright is also a soloist with the Oregon Symphony and has been a regu- lar participant in Portland’s Annual Blues Festival. Admission for the event is $35.
