BRIEFS North Coast Writers’ Residency accepting applications ASTORIA – The North Coast Writers’ Residency is now accepting applications for its 2022 program. The residency, sponsored by the Writers’ Guild of Asto- ria and Astoria Visual Arts, allows the writer-in-residence to spend one week in pursuit of a project of their choosing in a lovely cottage located on Washington’s Willapa Bay. The residency provides writing time and space in an idyllic setting to develop a writing project. Writers of nov- els, short stories, nonfi ction, plays, memoir, poetry, screen- plays and hybrid manuscripts will be considered. The week of the residency will be determined by the program hosts and chosen writer. Lodging, daily lunches and a stipend of $250 are provided. A reception and public reading will be held at the end of the residency at the AVA Gallery in Astoria. Applications will be accepted through April 15. These should include a cover letter describing the candidate’s writing experience and project proposal, a resume and a work sample. Clatsop County 4-H hosts youth event Bikini Beach to perform at KALA ASTORIA – The Clatsop County 4-H program will off er a day fi lled with workshops for youth ages 9 to 19 at the Clat- sop County Fairgrounds on April 9 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This event is open to all youth regardless of 4-H member- ship, and will showcase the organization’s activities, includ- ing animal education, hiking skills, jewelry making, robot- ics, archery and more. Youth ages 5 to 8 can also participate in various activities and games, as well as visit rabbits, chick- ens, dogs, and other animals. Visitors are asked to donate non-perishable food for the Clatsop County Food Bank in lieu of an admission fee. ASTORIA – Vintage instrumental surf rock group Bikini Beach will perform at KALA on Saturday at 8 p.m. The band of locals, featuring Lorenzo Carlson on lead guitar, Joe Lev on bass, Larry Aldred on drums and Brad Bleidt on keyboard, will perform surf classics at the Asto- ria venue. Admission for the show is $10. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Seating will be limited. Masks and proof of COVID vacci- nation are required for all attendees.
