    Harbor House writers’ symposium
LONG BEACH, Wash. — Aspir-
ing writers are invited to register for
the 2022 Winter Writers’ Symposium
on March 5 at the Chautauqua Resort
and Conference Center.
Organized by Harbor House Writ-
ers, the gathering “has something to
offer all budding and beginner writ-
ers and authors — even for writ-
ers who’ve been at it for a while and
are wondering about new tricks to
get more done and sell more books,”
said Gregory E. Zschomler, novelist
and playwright of works such as the
Bayou Boys series for young readers.
Zschomler, who used to own Harbor
Books in Aberdeen, serves as CEO
of Harbor House Writers and Eyrie
Press publishers. He will speak on
publishing options.
Other speakers will include
author, poet and retired teacher Jan
Bono of Long Beach, and Mag-
gie Lynch, who pens fiction in vari-
ous genres as well as publications to
assist other writers.
The conference runs from 8 a.m.
to 4 p.m. with breakfast included. It
will open with a concert by Pacific
Northwest singer-songwriter Amanda
Ransom. Early registration is $69.
After Tuesday , the cost is $99.

SALEM – The Oregon Arts Commis-
sion and The Ford Family Foundation have
awarded more than $88,000 in Opportu-
nity Grants to 28 statewide artists for career
development projects. Included in the recip-
ients is Astoria’s Kristin Nekovar, also
known as blis, receiving $1,000 support the
completion of custom, hardwood framing in
preparation for Nekovar’s debut exhibition
at Astoria Visual Arts Gallery.

‘Valley of Th e Dolls’
movie set for Liberty
ASTORIA — The Astoria International Film
Festival is presenting the 1960s classic, “Valley
of The Dolls,” at the Liberty Theatre on Sunday
at 1 p.m.
General admission is $10. Proof of vaccina-
tion or a negative COVID-19 test are required
for entry. Doors open at noon .
Bayside Singers
seek additional voices
OCEAN PARK, Wash. — Leaders of Bay-
side Singers, a Long Beach Peninsula musical
group, are on the recruitment trail ahead of two
public concerts on May 14 and 21.
Conducted by Milton Williams, a retired
musician and educator who lives in Ocean Park,
the group has been entertaining audiences in the
Long Beach area since 2007.
Members rehearse each Tuesday from 1 to
3 p.m. at the Ocean Park Lutheran Church. Sopra-

Music scholarships available
for high school seniors
Applications for Oregon Music Hall of Fame
scholarships are now open, with an extended
submission deadline of March 15.
Applicants must be Oregon residents and
2022 high school graduates entering college
in the fal, and are planning to study music as a
major or minor fi eld.
Four scholarships of $2,500 will be available
this year.
Applications will be accepted online at http://
