When he got out he signed on with
a baseball team in the Negro Leagues.
At that time, black players were not
allowed in the all-white Major Leagues.
Then, on October 23, 1945 Branch
Rickey, the general manager of the
Brooklyn Dodgers, asked Jackie
Robinson to play for the Dodgers
beginning in 1947. He said it would be
difficult to be the first man to end
segregation in Major League Baseball.
