PREP ROUNDUP
BOYS BASKETBALL
Two league wins in
a row for Astoria
Colton McMaster scored
25 points, all in the first and
fourth quarters, to lead Asto-
ria to a convincing 69-50
over visiting Valley Catho-
lic in a Cowapa League boys
basketball game Tuesday
night.
Following scores by Trey
Woodrich, McMaster and
Niko Boudreau, the Fisher-
men built a 20-10 lead early
in the second quarter.
The Valiants gradually
fought back and tied the
game at 32-32, but a trey
from Astoria sophomore
Owen Williams sparked a
decisive 13-0 run.
After McMaster, the Fish-
ermen had balanced scoring
from Field (13 points), Wil-
liams (12), Woodrich (nine)
and Boudreau (seven).
“We always seem to have
that one quarter where we
have problems with our shot
selection, but we’re doing a
good job in figuring out how
to close out games,” said
Astoria coach Kevin Goin,
whose team scored 18 or
more points in three of the
four quarters. “Our assists
are up a bunch and we made
good decisions the rest of
the night. Judd (Field) had a
good game and Trey played
well. Those are two import-
ant league wins (over Tilla-
mook and Valley Catholic)
for us.”
In addition to last Fri-
day’s victory over Tilla-
mook, the win over the Val-
iants gave Astoria its first
back-to-back league wins
since 2016.
Seaside boys win
at Tillamook
Seaside bounced back
from Saturday’s loss at
Knappa with a routine Cow-
apa League boys basketball
win Tuesday at Tillamook,
62-48.
Conner Langmo was
unstoppable for the Gulls in
the second and third quar-
ters, finishing with a game-
high 22 points.
Izzy Jantes added a
career high 15 points and
Ever Sibony scored 10 for
Seaside, which remained
at No. 5 in the latest Ore-
gon School Activities Asso-
ciation rankings. The Gulls
have three straight games
at home, beginning Friday
with Banks.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Knappa boys post
two more wins
No letdown for the
Knappa Loggers this week.
Following Saturday’s big
win over Seaside, the Log-
gers went right back to work
Monday in a Northwest
League game at Columbia
Christian, where Knappa
easily won its 13th game in a
row, 72-45 over the Knights.
Knappa cruised past
Portland Christian Tuesday,
69-33, for a 14th straight
win.
The Loggers opened
Monday’s game with an
18-0 run, and 3-pointers
from Brandon Gale, Nico-
lai Ogier and Shane McMa-
han helped Knappa build a
36-12 halftime lead.
Four Loggers finished in
double figures, led by Logan
Morrill’s 16 points.
A 13-0 fourth quarter
run by Columbia Christian
brought the Knights back
to within 14 points, and
brought the Knappa starters
back off the bench. Gale hit
two more 3-pointers in the
final minute to finish with
14 points, while McMahan
and Tanner Jackson had 13
points apiece.
In other boys basket-
ball action Tuesday, War-
renton edged Rainier 44-42,
Seaside rallied from a
16-6 deficit to score a 39-31
Cowapa League girls bas-
ketball win Tuesday night
at Tillamook.
The Gulls had not played
in 11 days due to coronavi-
rus precautions while some
players were in quarantine.
Lilli Taylor sparked
the comeback with three
straight scores in the sec-
ond quarter, and snapped a
31-31 tie with 53 seconds
left in the fourth.
After scoring on a
layup, she made 5-of-6 free
throws to close out the win,
for Seaside’s first back-
to-back victories of the
season.
Abby Nofield added five
points as Seaside’s next
highest scorer, while Lexie
Braxling had 14 points for
Tillamook.
The Gulls have upcom-
ing league games with
Banks and Valley Catholic,
with four of their next five
games at home.
Astoria overcomes
shooting woes to
top Valiants
Astoria had a tough night
from the field, but still won
easily over Valley Catholic,
52-33, in a Cowapa League
girls basketball game on
Tuesday at the Brick House.
The Lady Fishermen
held a slim 20-16 lead at
halftime, with half their
points from the free throw
line.
Valley Catholic was still
within 31-25 late in the
third quarter, when Astoria
turned on the heat, and went
on a 14-2 run for a 45-27
advantage.
Astoria freshman Shelby
Bruney had a rough first
half, then went on a scor-
ing spree over the final 10
minutes, sparked by a turn-
around jumper and a score
off a steal in the final two
minutes of the third quarter.
Freshman Tayla Huber
and Bruney scored off
more Valiant turnovers, and
freshman Nayomi Holm-
stedt hit a pair of 3-point-
ers in the fourth, as No.
12-ranked Astoria pulled
away and improved to 9-8
overall.
Warrenton had early
hopes of an upset Tuesday,
but Rainier staged a sec-
ond rally to top the War-
riors 50-34 in a Coastal
Range League girls basket-
ball game.
Warrenton led 17-11
after one quarter, and by
one point at halftime.
Lacey Makinson led
Rainier’s comeback charge
with 16 points, followed by
Kalli Budge with 14 points
and 16 rebounds.
In Northwest League
action, Portland Christian
scored a 35-27 win over
visiting Knappa. The Lady
Loggers have back-to-back
games upcoming with Ver-
nonia. Jewel defeated Falls
City 30-17 in the 1A Casco
