Marshfi eld boys defeat
Seaside in 4A showdown
Two of the top three ranked teams in the
latest 4A boys basketball coaches poll met
at a neutral site Wednesday night, and No.
3-ranked Marshfi eld got the best of No.
2-ranked Seaside, 60-50. The contest was
held at Toledo.
The two teams could meet again at
another neutral site, such as March 12 in
Forest Grove with a state championship on
the line.
The Pirates scored the win Wednesday,
rallying from an 11-point defi cit in the fi rst
half.
The Gulls were on fi re from the 3-point
line early on, hitting fi ve of their fi rst eight
3-pointers. Led by Carson Kawasoe’s three
treys, Seaside was 6-for-13 from the arc in
the fi rst half, better than the Pirates were
from the free throw line (4-of-12).
Yet Marshfi eld still found itself trailing
just 26-24 at halftime.
The Gulls could not maintain their pace
in the second half, as Seaside made just two
of their 12 3-point attempts, while Marsh-
fi eld opened the third quarter with a quick
13-4 run.
A bank shot by Dominic Montiel gave
the Pirates a 37-30 advantage, a 3-pointer
from Montiel made it 40-31, and Mon-
tiel highlighted the quarter by inbounding
the ball off the back of a Seaside defender,
scoring, drawing a foul and completing a
three-point play for a 43-36 lead after three

Lady Gulls on a neutral court Wednesday
night in Toledo, 38-14.
The Pirates scored the fi rst nine points
of the game before Seaside battled back to
within 11-5 early in the second quarter.
Marshfi eld ended the fi rst half with a
running jump shot from Kate Miles, and
Charlie Dea was fouled on a 3-pointer at the
buzzer to end the half, and made all three
free throws for an 18-7 advantage.
The second half belonged to the Pirates,
who outscored the Gulls 20-7 over the fi nal
16 minutes.
Marshfi eld had seven players in the scor-
ing column, but none in double fi gures.
Miles led with nine points. Lilli Taylor had a
team-high seven for Seaside.

I saw the highest standard of health safety practices in effect
during my hygienist appointment today—much higher precau-
tions than I’d seen in a local hospital when having tests last
month. The new sanitation equipment and attention to patient
safety at Klemp Family Dentistry is in keeping with a dental
practice I consider cutting edge with respect to all my dental
needs. It’s wonderful having a world class dental practice here
at the coast, one where I can have procedures performed for
which I used to have to travel to a specialist in Portland. I have
been a patient of several local dentists in the past, but none
had the skill and, more importantly, the attention to patient
comfort that Dr Klemp provides.
