If your home has central heating or
air conditioning, you probably have
something in your house called a
thermostat. The thermostat is where
you can change the temperature in
your house.
HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation,
Air Conditioning.

different shapes and

The word thermostat comes from two
ancient Greek words: thermo (meaning
heat) and statos (meaning to stay the
same). A thermostat is something that
“keeps heat the same.”
An HVAC technician installs, repairs,
and maintains heating, ventilation and
air conditioning systems that control the
temperature and air quality in buildings.

Warning: Your HVAC system uses a lot of energy. You probably have seen the thermostat that can change the
temperature of your home or classroom. Only change the thermostat settings when you have permission from an adult.
What is ventilation?
Ventilation is the movement of air in
a house or building. An example of
ventilation is a window open in a
house. But sometimes the air outside
is too cold or too hot to open the
window. HVAC systems circulate
fresh air in a building while keeping
the temperature comfortable.
