    Artists, space sought for
SMART Reading mural
ASTORIA — A statewide early literacy
nonprofi t is seeking a local artist and wall
space for an exterior public art mural project
in Clatsop County.
SMART Reading is an organization that
provides children with books and reading
support. As part of a statewide celebration of
SMART Reading’s 30th anniversary,
the group is commissioning murals inspired
by children’s books in 10 communities
across Oregon.
The vision for the murals is to embody
the fun and imaginative power of children’s
books and their ability to transform lives and
open doors to opportunities and adventures.
Artists interested in applying for the
mural project and businesses or organi-
zations with wall space they’re willing to
donate can fi nd more information at smar-

Ecologist scheduled to speak about
Oregon Coast prairies Th ursday
ASTORIA — Ecologist Doug Glavich
will lead an online discussion about Ore-
gon Coast Range prairies Thursday.
The free event will be held online and
will take place at 7 p.m. on Facebook Live
on the Lewis and Clark National Historical
Park Facebook page.
The talk will explore what impacts
have led to the loss of this habitat type and
ongoing restoration eff orts.
Glavich has over 20 years of experi-
ence working in the world of ecology. He
is an ecologist for the U.S. Forest Ser-
vice Northwest Oregon ecology group,
which covers the Siuslaw, Willamette, and
Mount Hood national forests, as well as
the Columbia River Gorge National Sce-
nic Area.
Nature Matters takes place on the fourth
Thursday of each month from October

Seaside Library hosts
writer’s workshop with
award-winning author
SEASIDE — The Friends of the Seaside Pub-
lic Library will host award-winning Oregon Coast
author Melissa Eskue Ousley Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. in
the Seaside Public Library’s Community Room.
Ousley will be discuss her most recent young
adult novel, “Constellations of Stars” and conduct-
ing a writing workshop for writers of all levels. The
book is set in Seaside and was an award-winning
fi nalist in the 2021 International Book Awards.
Participation is capped at a maximum of 10 and
sign-ups are required.
The Seaside Public Library is located at 1131
