Th e hidden horrors of Halloween

The National Retail Federation is pre-
dicting Halloween spending will reach an
all-time high of $10.14 billion this year.
Purchases of decorations are expected
to reach $3.17 billion, up from last year’s
$2.59 billion. The federation predicts 1.8
million kids will dress as Spiderman, and
another 1.6 million will dress as their favor-
ite Disney princess.
Meanwhile, a majority of adults are
forecasted to pose as vampires, ghosts,
pirates and cats for All Hallows’ Eve.
The federation’s numbers make my
stomach turn. Spiderman, Disney prin-
cesses, vampires and the rest of the spooky
crew aren’t new to the haunting season.
What’s truly terrifying is that millions of
these costumes are still sitting in landfi lls
across the globe from Halloween celebra-
tions long ago.
This issue of Coast Weekend will fea-
ture more sustainable costume options. On
pages 8 and 9 you’ll fi nd a list of local thrift
stores that are stocked with options to cre-
ate an excellent costume or home display.
However, the best option to reduce
waste is to reuse what you already have at
home. Page 10 includes a step-by-step tuto-
rial to put a shocking spin on your normal
attire with a gruesome new look.
