Arts council
will hold virtual
summit Saturday
ASTORIA — The Arts Council of
Clatsop County will hold the second
annual Arts Summit, designed to sup-
port, educate and inspire working art-
ists, local
arts orga-
nizations
and other
stake-
holders.
The
sum-
mit, “Art
Works!,” will take place virtually from
12:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday.
The summit includes fi ve workshops
led by industry professionals focused
on topics like understanding copyright
issues, becoming a professional, fi nding
funding, navigating online options and
developing a business plan.
Attendees are welcome to join any
and all workshops. The event is free but

Storyteller
will present
dark tales
at KALA
Will Hornyak will share Gaelic stories in Astoria to celebrate the festival of Samhain.
ASTORIA — Master Storyteller Will
Hornyak will present “Mostly Grimm:
Tales from the Darkest Side of the Broth-
er’s Collected Stories,” at KALA Art Gal-
lery to celebrate Samhain Friday night.
Samhain is a Gaelic festival mark-
ing the end of the harvest season and
beginning of winter or “darker-half” of
the year. Hornyak will weave together
an oral presentation that includes Irish
myths, Russian fairytales, Mexican folk-
tales and Oregon tall tales to celebrate
the occasion.
Hornyak has performed throughout
the United States and been a featured
teller at the National Storytelling Festi-
val in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
Doors will open at 7 p.m., the per-
formance starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are
$15 and can be purchased in advance at
brownpapertickets.com. The show is for
mature audiences, age 14 and older.
Audience members must show proof
of vaccination or negative COVID test.

Astoria Art Loft
introduces fall
calligraphy classes
ASTORIA — The Astoria Art Loft is
launching a fall calligraphy class series
beginning Oct. 30.
The class, taught by Mary K. Bar-
endse-Adams, will help participants
learn uppercase and lowercase letters,
as well as numbers in a form that can be
extended to more intricate and compli-
cated styles.
The four-session class costs $50
and will take place from 10:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. Oct. 30 and Nov. 6, 13 and 20.
