DAR holds meeting
The Astorian
The Astoria Chapter of
the Daughters of the Amer-
ican Revolution will meet
on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at
the Astoria Golf & Coun-
try Club.
The program will be an
interactive titled “Lunch at
the White House with Car-
oline Harrison.”
Participants are asked

membership.
Information for the
National Society’s Good
Citizen Scholarship con-
test for high school seniors,
Junior American Citi-
zen contests, open to pre-
school through seniors,
and the American History
essay contests, open to fi fth
graders to seniors, will be
available to local schools
in Clatsop and Tillamook
counties soon. Several of
the contests are also avail-
able to home schooled
students.
The theme for this
year’s Junior American
Citizen contests is the
“100th Anniversary Tomb
of the Unknown Soldier:
Rise and Shine for Duty,
Honor and Patriotism.”
Patriots of the American
Revolution is the topic
for grades nine through
seniors, and grades fi ve
through eight are to imag-
ine losing a brother on
the battlefi elds of France
during World War I and
attending the dedication of
the Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier in Washington,
D.C., on Nov. 11, 1921.
The chapter will also
be placing displays in area
communities to focus on
Constitution Week, Sept.
17 through Sept. 21.
Membership to the
organization is open to any
woman 18 and over who
can trace their lineage to
someone who assisted the
colonies in the American
Revolution.

Gauthier,
of Astoria,
announce the engage-
ment of their daughter,
Tanya Gauthier, of Asto-
ria, to Rocky Koons, also
of Astoria.
The prospective groom
is the son of Russ Koons,
of Seattle, and Julie Koons,
of Astoria.
Tanya Gauthier grad-
uated from Astoria High
School in 2007 and from
Clatsop Community Col-
lege in 2014.
Rocky Koons is a 2001
graduate of Astoria High
School. He is a self-em-
ployed fi sherman.
A Sept. 18 wedding
is planned for 4 p.m. at
Big Creek Lodge in
Knappa.

competes at state fair
The Astorian
Members of the Paws ‘N
Action dog club recently
competed at the Oregon
State Fair.
Hunter Kautz and “Yoda”
led his team in the competi-
tive Showmanship ring to a
blue-ribbon performance.
Jeremiah
Schlink
and “Hopper,” his viva-
cious papillon, achieved
a blue-ribbon award, just
missing out on the cham-
pionship win in Showman-
ship. They came back strong
with a Reserve Champion
placement in their Obedi-
ence class.
Samantha Carlisle and
“Finn” earned a blue in
Showmanship,
culminat-
ing with a championship in
an advanced off -lead Obe-
dience class. Carlisle also
received a blue for both of
her entered photographs,
one of which was given a
Medallion award.
Jocelynne Adams com-
peted with her two service
dogs “Nakita” and “Tun-
dra”; Nakita earned a red
ribbon in her advanced Obe-
dience class while Tundra
scored a blue in Showman-
ship and champion in his
beginner Obedience class.

water some 18 ½ feet on his
second try. At the end of the
show, Adams was awarded a
High-Combined medal for
her scores in Showmanship
and Obedience. Adams also
received a blue for one of
her photographs.
Another Paws ‘N Action
club member, Lindsey
McCarthy, represented Clat-
sop County as a 4-H state
ambassador.
On Labor Day , volun-
teers from Home Depot,
Astoria Rotary and the
Astoria Scandinavian Her-
itage Association helped
set up tree protection at the
Astoria Nordic Heritage
Park prior to construction,
which began Tuesday.
The Astoria Scandina-
vian Heritage Association
was off ered this option as
a $7,000 coast saving mea-
sure by the project’s gen-
eral contractor, Ricken-
bach Construction. The
total cost of the park con-
struction is $1.5 million.
Funding was provided by
more than 400 donors,
seven corporations, 12
foundations and organiza-
tions and two governmen-
tal entities over a period of
six years.
The Astoria Rotary,
Team Depot (employees
from Warrenton’s Home
Depot ), park donors and
community members vol-
unteered time to com-
plete the project. The U.S.
Foods Chef’store in War-
renton provided bever-
ages and treats for the
volunteers.

dation provided funds
to purchase 140 t-posts,
1,400 feet of construction
fencing and 1,000 zip ties.
The Home Depot Founda-
tion wrote in its award let-

are doing to give back in
your community and hope
that this grant will help
you reach your projects
goal.”
Construction of the park
will take place over the
next two to four months.
Progress will be docu-
mented on the park’s web-
site and on social media.
