COWAPA
ALL-LEAGUE
Jeff TerHar
Seaside softball coaches Jessica Garrigues and Joel Dierickx with the Gulls’
three seniors from the 2021 season, from left, Emma Taylor, Kandice Flaigg
and Gracie Rhodes. All three were Cowapa all-league, as were seven of
Seaside’s nine starters.
each team was also selected all-
league, with four on the first team.
It was also a great year to be
a Gull, as Seaside had a pitcher,
catcher, all four infielders and one
outfielder earn all-league honors.
Six Astoria players were named
all-league.
In the 3A Coastal Range
League, state champion Clatskanie
dominated the selections, with 11
players earning all-league hon-
ors. The Tigers defeated Rainier in
the unofficial 3A state champion-
ship game this spring. Warrenton’s
lone selection was junior Avyree
Miethe, to the first team. The
Warriors also earned the league’s
sportsmanship award.

Ryan Crouser celebrates after winning the final of the
men’s shot put at the Olympics on Thursday in Tokyo.
Crouser’s
gold a tribute
to his grandpa
Ryan Crouser has been
setting records all summer.
In the men’s shot put
final on Thursday, the Ore-
gon-born athlete won his
second gold medal with a
huge 23.30-meter throw on
his final attempt.
Crouser broke his own
Olympic record of 22.52
meters he set at the Rio
Games in 2016 in each
of his six attempts in the
Tokyo final before record-
ing the second-best throw
of all-time, shy of his
world record.
After Crouser domi-
nated Thursday, he had a
special message for the
man that helped him get to
where he is today.
Crouser held up a spe-
cial piece of paper after
the win for his late grand-
father, Larry Crouser. The
28-year-old had the mes-
sage, “Grandpa, WE DID
IT, 2020 Olympic Cham-
pion!” written in Sharpie.
Crouser opened up
about his grandfather, who
passed away right before

the Olympics began, right
after winning.
“I held up a sign at the
end and that was for my
grandpa,” Crouser said.
“He passed away just over
a week ago. … He’s been
my biggest fan.”
Crouser talked about
the significance of the let-
ter and why he wrote down
that message. His grand-
father lost his hearing and
letters were how the two
would communicate. So he
wrote a message to him for
the world to see.
“He had a lot of health
issues towards the end, but
the one thing (is) you’d
never (see) him in a bad
mood,” he explained. “He
was always happy, and he
was always so supportive.”
When asked what he
thought his grandfather
would write back, Crouser
added: “He would tell me
to stop and smell the roses
for sure. That’s what he
would always tell me,”
Crouser said. “I know he
would be proud if he was
here and I felt like he was
here watching me. It was
definitely a special day.”
