Learn about Oregon’s shores Concert to be held in Naselle and conservation next weekend OREGON — The Oregon Shores Con- servation Coalition will host a 50th anni- versary celebration on July 29. A combina- tion of in-person and online events will be included. Geologist Orrin Pilkey and author Mary Ellen Hannibal will be featured. Pilkey is one of the world’s leading experts on the conservation of beaches and manage- ment of shorelines. Hannibal is the author of “Citizen Scientist: Searching for Heroes and Hope in an Age of Extinction.” In-person events include two guided beach walks. At 10:30 a.m., citizen science trainer Fawn Custer will lead a tidepool-ori- ented walk at Sunset Bay State Park will be held. Marine ecologist Stewart Schultz will lead a separate beach walk, starting at 10:30 a.m. at Manhattan Beach. He will be followed by Pilkey at 4 p.m. for a lec- ture titled “The Future of Our Beaches.” At 7 p.m., Hannibal will present “The Jim Wallace Orrin Pilkey Future Role of Citizen Science in Coastal Conservation.” To register for the virtual events, visit bit.ly/36Bate2 NASELLE — Carl Wirkkala’s new band, The Whistle Punks, will per- form at 6:30 p.m. on Sat- urday in the Naselle Com- munity Center, 14 Parpala Road. Travis Boggs, a local caterer, will sell hot dog and cheeseburger com- bos for purchase starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets for the concert will be available at the door. All are welcome to attend and masks are optional. Wirkkala is from Cas- tle Rock, Washington. He enjoys writing songs based on the stylings of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Bob Dylan. Several of his songs detail scenes from the diff erent regions in southwest Washington. He has been writing and performing for the past 20 years. He has released eight studio albums, and has another album on the way.
