he Fish fi nished second at the District 1 meet last week in their home
pool, and qualifi ed multiple swimmers for the state meet Saturday. Asto-
ria’s lone win was a highlight swim for senior Grace Peeler, whose 1:15.47 in
the 100-yard breaststroke broke a 15-year-old school record. Freshman team-
mate Marlee Both took second to qualify for state. Senior Tori Smith qualifi ed
with a second-place fi nish in the 200-yard individual medley, while Hannah
Daniels, Brooke O’Connor, Constance Rouda and Lily Reed will join Peeler and
Smith at state, as Astoria qualifi ed all three relays with second-place fi nishes.
he Warriors are taking a busload of students to the state meet Saturday,
qualifying 10 wrestlers in their district meet last week. With the school’s
fi rst district team championship since 1990, Warrenton had three individual
champions — Nic Pior at 145 pounds, Sam Irwin at 195 and Alex Tapia at 170
— with a second-place showing for James Mickelson (170), and third-place
fi nishes for Jorge Lopez (138), David Niehuser (152), Josh Niehuser (182) and
Josh Smith (220). Duane Falls (182) and Austin Atwood (126) also qualifi ed.
Warrenton coach Corey Conant was named Coach of the Year.

The Knappa Loggers will
continue their post-season
run Friday in central Oregon,
but their drive in the cham-
pionship bracket came to a
close Wednesday night in
Salem.
That’s where the Salem
Academy Crusaders had the
home court advantage in a 2A
boys basketball quarterfi nal
game and posted a 55-33 win
over the Loggers.
Salem Academy (12-1
overall) won its 11th in a row,
and snapped a seven-game
Knappa win streak.
The Loggers were sched-
uled to play Friday at 1 p.m.
at Sisters Middle School,
opponent to be determined.

day’s game had the Log-
gers trailing just 10-8, when
Salem Academy answered
with an off ensive rebound
basket from John Pass, spark-
ing a 21-5 run to close the
fi rst half.

zone gave us problems the
whole game.
“Off ensively they were
just so disciplined and didn’t
make any mistakes,” he said.
“Like usual, our guys played
hard and had great energy.

easy buckets and our out-
side shots weren’t falling. But
there is no shame in losing to
that team, and we still have a
chance to play on Saturday,
