By GARY HENLEY
The Astorian
Oregon high school
swim teams have entered
the post-season portion of
their schedules, and so far,
so good for both Astoria and
Seaside.
The Fish and the Gulls
both dominated the Cow-
apa League championships,
held last week at both Asto-
ria and Seaside pools.
Seaside ran away with
the boys’ league title, scor-
ing 394.5 points to top sec-
ond place Astoria (168), fol-
lowed by Tillamook (163.5)
and Valley Catholic (163).
The Astoria girls also
handily won another league
title, scoring 294 points
ahead of Seaside (194), Val-
ley Catholic (159) and Tilla-
mook (68).
Astoria’s girls 200-yard
medley and 400-yard free-
style relays both took fi rst,
“with some strong swim-
ming from Tori Smith,
Grace Peeler, Constance
Rouda and Hannah Dan-
iels,” said Astoria coach
Alyson O’Connor.
Daniels, a freshman,
added to her day by winning
the 100-yard butterfl y and
Shane Spell | Seaside coach
500-yard freestyle.
Peeler, a senior, added
points by taking second in
the 100 freestyle and 100
breaststroke.
Big points were also
scored by Smith and Rouda,
who won fi rst and second in
the backstroke.
On the boys side, Sea-
side coach Shane Spell
said, “The guys’ 200 med-
ley relay and 200 free relay
are getting into a groove
and should represent well at
districts.”
He added, “Sean Olea
had a nice PR in the 100
breaststroke, and Logan
Dennis had a nice PR in the
100 fl y.”
Seaside’s depth could
score a lot of points in the
OREGON CAPITAL
INSIDER
upcoming meets.
“The guys’ depth defi -
nitely played a big factor
in the overall team scores,”
Spell said. “We’ll get more
rest in before the district
meet ... and see how every-
one can do in lowering their
times. It’s going to be nice
having full heats and getting
to see competition from the
entire district.”
For the Astoria boys, the
400 freestyle relay (Phelan
Dopp, Stephen Ero, Trevor
Newman, Jacob Peeler)
placed third.
The Cowapa League
schools will participate in
a district meet this week,
along with Newport, Taft
and Toledo. The top two fi n-
ishers in each event at dis-
tricts will advance to a sea-
son-ending 4A showcase
meet at Cottage Grove High
School.
PREP SPORTS
SCHEDULE
Astoria had hopes of an
upset early on, but a 26-1
run by Seaside midway
through the second half
ended all Fishermen hopes,
helping the visiting Gulls to
an eventual 53-38 Clatsop
Clash boys basketball win
Friday night.
Playing on their home
court at the Brick House, the
Fishermen picked up a quick
fi ve points from Xander
Marincovich for a 7-2 lead.
Seaside countered with
a 9-0 rally, highlighted by a
Connor Langmo 3-pointer,
for a 20-11 advantage early
in the second quarter.
Astoria answered right
back with a 9-0 run of its
own, with back-to-back
baskets from freshman
Owen Williams helping tie
the game at 20-20.
The Fishermen led
29-27 after a score by
Colton McMaster early in
the third.
From there, Seaside’s
Ever Sibony scored on
a running jump shot that

sparked the big run for the
Gulls, who scored 26 of the
next 27 points.
Sibony had 18 of his
game-high 21 points during
the 26-1 run. Cash Corder
added 15 points, while
McMaster led Astoria with
nine points.
The Gulls were set to
play Monday at Tillamook,
and close with home games
against Banks and Astoria,
as Seaside tunes up for the
upcoming 4A state show-
case tournament, which
will be held June 24 and
June 25 at Marshfi eld and
North Bend high schools.
Astoria girls beat Seaside
in low-scoring game
Halle Helmersen had
seven of the 11 points, but
that would be her only
seven points of the game,
after scoring 36 against the
Cheesemakers.
Shelby Rasmussen led
Astoria with 10 points, while
Caleigh Peterson had six for
the Gulls, who were 3-for-13
at the free throw line.
The Lady Fishermen can
pull into a fi rst place tie in
the Cowapa League stand-
ings with a win Monday at
Valley Catholic.
The Astorian
After scoring 78 points
in a win at Tillamook two
days earlier, the Astoria
girls basketball team was
held to just 37 Friday night
at home against Seaside.
But 37 was plenty for the
Lady Fishermen, who held the
Gulls to just 19 points, in Asto-
ria’s low-scoring 37-19 win.
The Fishermen sprinted
out to an 11-0 lead after one
quarter and never looked
back.
