Exhibit features Indigenous art ASTORIA — A new art exhibit featuring Indigenous artists will be debuted from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the historic Anita building, 1312 Com- mercial St. The exhibit, “Pᵸot-Choch,” is the Chinook word for “Fort George.” The exhibit’s title was chosen with guid- ance from Tony Johnson, chairman of the Chinook Indian Nation. Pieces were curated by Steph Littlebird. The exhibit will be displayed through summer and features an all-Indigenous collection of traditional and contem- porary art, including carving, weaving, beadwork, painting and photography. The exhibit honors the original inhabi- tants of the North Coast, the Chinook. The gallery will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and by appointment. Funding for the proj- ect came from a Precipice Grant applied for by Liz Harris and Patri- cia Vázquez Gómez. The exhibition debuts a new wooden fl oor made possi- ble by additional funding from the Ford Foundation. Lecture to focus on regional fi res NEHALEM — Lower Nehalem Watershed Coun- cil will host a lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday at lnwc.nehalem. org Aaron Groth will host the lecture, titled “Coastal Fire History: The Tillamook Burn and What You Can Do to Pre- pare.” Groth will discuss the Echo Mountain Fire complex, the Mapleton Fire and the Pike Road Fire. He will focus on coastal Oregon fi re history, providing context and preven- tative steps residents can take. Groth is a regional fi re specialist for Oregon State University. His coverage area includes Clatsop, Colum- bia, Tillamook and Lincoln counties. The meeting is part of the council’s online speaker series. Ousley will read from her latest book, “Constel- lations of Scars,” a novel set in Seaside. She will also discuss her publish- ing experience with Elle Beaumont of Midnight Tide Publishing. Ousley serves as the Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District’s direc- tor of marketing promo- tions and special events in Seaside. Ousley’s novel follows 12-year-old Amelia, who recently started growing pearls. She runs away from home and soon learns the world is much more dangerous than she expected.
