Astoria First Baptist Church
First Baptist Church, 349 Seventh St.,
holds an in-person worship service at

Rev. Carren Sheldon
Grace Episcopal Church
Grace Episcopal Church, 1545
Franklin Ave., has announced that
the Rev. Carren Sheldon will serve
as the church’s 20th rector. She
comes from St. Luke’s Episcopal
Church in Woodland, California,
where she served as interim rector.
Sheldon studied at the Church
Divinity School of the Pacifi c in
Berkeley, California, received
a master’s degree in divinity in
2012, was ordained as a deacon in
2013 and as a priest in 2014. Her
fi rst service is at 10 a.m. Sunday,
which is Pentecost Sunday; those
attending are requested to wear
red in celebration of this day.

National, state safe boating
week starts Saturday
May 22 through May 28 is both National
Safe Boating Week and Oregon Safe Boat-
ing Week, launching the North American Safe
Boating Campaign to help ensure the public
has a safe, secure and enjoyable boating expe-
rience this season by bringing attention to
life-saving tips.
According to U.S. Coast Guard statistics
for recreational boating, an average of 600
people die each year in boating-related acci-
dents in the U.S. Approximately 79% of these
fatalities are caused by drowning.
In Oregon, all boaters who operate a motor-
boat over 10 horsepower, and youths ages 12
to 15, operating a motorboat of any size, are
required to take an approved boating safety
course and carry a boater education card. For

Boating and paddling classes, both online

ments for a free vessel safety check for recre-
ational boats and paddle craft can be found at

Lions Club receives funding
The Astoria Loins Club has announced that
new funding has been granted to the club’s
charity arm by the Clatsop County Board of
Commissioners.
The funds will provide sight and hear-
ing assistance to more residents of Clat-
sop County who meet the following criteria:
A gross monthly income, before tax, not to
exceed $2,137 for a family of one, or $2,873
for a family of two (larger family sizes qualify
at increasing maximums); and have no other
medical insurance that provides eyeglasses
and hearing aid benefi ts.

Blue Star Families receive
free museum admission
The Columbia River Maritime Museum
will participant in the Blue Stars Museum pro-
gram this summer through Sept. 6.
The National Endowment for the Arts and
Blue Star Families announced the return of the
program.
This free admission program is avail-
able for those serving in the U.S. Army, U.S.
Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine Corps and
U.S. Coast Guard; as well as members of the
U.S. Army Reserve, U.S. National Guard, the
U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned
Corps and National Oceanic and Atmo-
spheric Administration; and up to fi ve fam-
ily members.
Admission to the Maritime Museum is
already free for active-duty military but the
museum participates in the Blue Star Museums
program as a way to thank military families.
Local credit unions host shred day
WARRENTON — Two local credit unions
are hosting a Shred Day event from 9 a.m. to
noon Saturday, or until the collection truck is
full, at Lum’s Auto Center, 1605 S.E. Ensign
Lane.
TLC, a division of Fibre Federal Credit
Union, and Wauna Credit Union, are joining
to fi ght identity theft by shredding fi nancial
documents. Citizens can bring up to three
10-ream paper boxes and have them shred-
ded securely and professionally for free.
