Cowapa League girls golf fi n-
ished up its short season with the

ings, averaging 25 points per

Seaside placed second (18) to
qualify as a team for the state tour-
nament, followed by Tillamook

Seaside boys golf comes up short at Banks
Banks beats Seaside in softball showdown
The Astorian
After a 30-minute pre-
game ceremony, it only
took the Banks Braves
about 12 minutes to score
six runs in the top of the
second inning Thursday,
all they would need for a
10-3 win over Seaside in
a Cowapa League soft-
ball game at Broadway
Field.
Before the game, the
Gulls offi cially dedi-
cated the Herche Fam-
ily indoor training facil-
ity, and honored seniors
from both teams for
Senior Day.
The Braves then
posted a quick 2-0 lead
in the fi rst inning, and
followed with six in the
second, highlighted by a
two-run single from Syd-

Tara Lair and Erin
Owsley both had singles
and scored for Seaside
in the fourth inning, and
Lair had a double and
scored in the sixth, as the
Gulls outscored Banks
3-2 over the fi nal four
innings.
Pitchers Brooke Van-
dehey and Alex Saunders
combined on a two-hit-
ter for the Braves. Banks
clinched the league title
with an 11-0 record
(13-0 overall), while the
Gulls slip to 9-4. The two
teams are scheduled to
play Saturday at Banks,
followed by an eight-
team state tournament.
Banks baseball
tops Seaside, 15-5
Seaside opened the
scoring with two runs in
the top of the fi rst, but it
was all Banks after that,
as the Braves had four
runs in the bottom of the
fi rst and scored in every
inning after that, for a
15-5 win Thursday after-
noon in Cowapa League
baseball action at Banks.
The Braves tacked on
two runs in the second,
six in the third and three
in the fourth.
The Hesselman broth-
ers combined fi ve hits

fi nished 3-for-3 with a

For the fi rst time in school his-
tory, the Seaside boys golf team
lost to Banks — and it could not
have come at a more inopportune
time.
In a Cowapa League dual
match Tuesday at Quail Valley
Golf Course, the Gulls and Braves
were playing for the league’s sec-
ond spot at next week’s state tour-
nament. With a 358 to 378 victory,
the Braves move on to state and
the Gulls’ season comes to an end.
Seaside senior Curtis Kunde
birdied three of the fi rst four holes
on the back nine to shoot 75, the
low score of the day, and gave the
Seagulls a six-stroke lead with
Banks’ Arron Brown shooting 81.
Seaside junior Carson Kawasoe
then came in with an 83 to Jake
Walters’ 94 to extend the Gulls’
lead to 17. When Seaside’s Ever-
est Sibony came in with a 109 and
Ben Cost of Banks shot 96, it was
back down to four strokes.
Then John Cost came in with
a 90 to 125 for Seaside’s Conner
Langmo, and Banks suddenly led
by 31 strokes. Owen Higdon came
in with a 111 to knock 14 strokes
off Seaside’s score, but Bo Worm-
ington knocked three off of Banks’
total with a 93 for the fi nal tally,
358-378.
“Golf tournaments are won by
the three through fi ve guys, and
today their three though fi ve were
much better than ours,” said Sea-
side coach Jim Poetsch. “But I
think the two kids that put in the
eff ort in the off -season, Kunde and
Kawasoe, should both earn a trip
to state.
“Kunde will for sure, as he won
every league match we played,
and Carson is on the bubble, but I
think he will get in,” Poetsch said.
“Once again, we had four JV kids
beat varsity kids. It still wouldn’t
have been enough if they had
played varsity today, but it does
bode well for the future. We now
have 371 days to get ready for next
year’s state tournament.”
The 4A state tournament will
be held May 18 at Trysting Tree
Golf Club in Corvallis.
