Warrenton baseball
downs Willamina, 8-2
The Astorian
Three Warrenton pitchers combined on
a three-hitter for an 8-2 win over Willamina
in a Coastal Range League baseball game
Thursday at Huddleston Field.
Mike Ulness started and Cam Daniels
pitched three solid innings with Dawson Lit-
tle closing.
Warrenton’s biggest highlights included
the fi rst career hit for freshman Max Smith
and an RBI sacrifi ce bunt from sophomore
Damon Campbell.
Warrenton improved to 6-0 in league, tied
with Rainier. After losing their season opener,
the Warriors have won eight straight overall.
Astoria tops Tillamook in eight
Astoria bounced back from a 4-3 loss
to Tillamook two days earlier, with a 5-4,
eight-inning Cowapa League baseball win
over the Cheesemakers Wednesday.
Astoria had fi ve runs on just four hits
with seven errors — but it was good enough
to beat the Mooks, helping the Fishermen
improve to 3-7 in league play, while the
Cheesemakers drop to 3-5. Astoria has two
league games remaining, both against Valley

The Fishermen scored the game-win-

Tony Tumbarello delivered a one-out single

Boudreau had doubled to lead off the
inning, just Astoria’s third hit of the game.
Three Tillamook pitchers had allowed two

Astoria pitchers Gunnar Olson and Kar-

Combined, the two teams stranded 19

Trailing 3-1 heading into the seventh

give Tillamook a 4-3 lead.
Astoria battled back in the bottom of the

lead off and stole second. Aiden Giles was
hit by a pitch, and Olson walked to load the

Bo Williams followed with a ground

sending the game to extra innings.
PREP ROUNDUP
Seaside boys golf
back in the state title hunt
The chances of winning a state champi-
onship this spring just increased dramati-
cally for the Seaside boys golf team.
For the fi rst time this shortened season, the
Gulls showed their potential in a 344-365 vic-
tory over Tillamook in a dual match Tuesday.
Tillamook shot its best round of the
year, but the Mooks were no match for the
Gulls. Curtis Kunde was back to his win-
ning ways but this time had to share medal-
ist honors with junior Carson Kawasoe, who
was playing in his fi rst match of the season
after breaking his collarbone in Seaside’s last
football game.
The Seagulls also had Everest Sibony
shoot a season-low 91, followed by Conner
Langmo (109) and Owen Higdon (112).
Kunde and Kawasoe battled for medal-
ist honors all day with three lead changes
before ending in a tie, each with 72s.
“I don’t want to get too excited about
today because just (Monday) we were at a
low point for the season,” said Seaside coach
Jim Poetsch. “But I’ve been telling them all
season that once Carson is back, we only
need two scores close to 90 to be really good.
I think Curtis and Carson are the best one-
two pair in the state, and today we got one
player in that 90 range.”
The Gulls fi nish the regular season with
a match at Quail Valley Golf Course against
Banks, with the winner earning a trip to the
4A state tournament.
Lady Fishermen,
Gulls post softball wins
In Cowapa League softball action
Wednesday, Astoria defeated Tillamook
12-1, in a single game at Tillamook.
The Lady Fishermen evened their league
record at 5-5, with two league contests remain-
ing, both against winless Valley Catholic.
In other action Wednesday, Seaside
knocked off Knappa 16-3 in a nonleague
contest at Knappa.
