Get ready, set, dance Astoria School of Ballet to host kid-friendly event on Saturday BY JANAE EASLON Every year, Astoria School of Ballet excit- edly waits to share a new performance with more than 2,000 students in the area. Because of coronavirus pandemic restric- tions, something new is afoot for the school, specially curated for the Astoria Art Walk on Saturday. Students will have a chance to see MORE THAN YOU IMAGINED 8 // COASTWEEKEND.COM Astoria School of Ballet’s annual show — but in an unexpected, fun way. “We’re doing things diff erently,” said Margaret Wall, the owner of Astoria School of Ballet. “The schools have been off ering students what they call ‘engagement activi- ties’ for students outside of class time. We’ve planned an engagement activity for the whole community … during art walk, we’ll be host- ing a scavenger hunt downtown, for stu- dents, families, and any and all that want to participate.” Astoria School of Ballet will have char- acters from its ballet, “La Boutique fan- 3D Theater Lightship Tour Gift Store tasque,” — which translates to “The Fantastic Toyshop” — posed in various storefront win- dows downtown. Participants will get a map with clues, col- lect stickers when they fi nd a character and compete to win small prizes. Following the hunt, Astoria School of Ballet will reveal a sneak peak of a video of a recent live per- formance the school did at the Liberty The- atre. Later that evening, the prerecorded vir- tual performance of the ballet can be viewed safely and comfortably from home, Wall said. “This is a Liberty Theatre and communi- ty-sponsored event,” Wall said. “We are only If You Go Astoria School of Ballet performance 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday in downtown Astoria able to put it on with the support of the Lib- erty and our wonderful community.” Access to the link and show will be free for everyone.
